Here’s what’s happening on TMU campus this month!

Add a little spring to your step this May and attend TMU activities on campus this month including:  The Image Centre’s Spring/Summer Exhibitions, The Red Dress exhibit, and a Flourishing Mixer for Black alumni and friends. With a variety of events centered around art, culture, and education, there is no shortage of things to do this spring. Explore our events listed below for more details! 

May 1
The Recreative Market 
If you're keen on sustainability and supporting local businesses, don't miss The Recreative Market on Gould Street this spring and summer! We'll be hosting top small business vendors from across Toronto every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Experience a vibrant street-style market with 40 vendors offering arts, crafts, jewelry and more.

May 5 
Red Dress Exhibit | Msko-mjigoodenh Zhinoomaagewin
Join us at TMU as we commemorate Red Dress Day with our inaugural Red Dress Exhibit on May 5-6. Also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People, the exhibit will be a visible reminder of the targeted gendered and racialized crimes against indigenous Peoples. The dresses represent the pain and loss that is felt by loved ones and survivors and the impact on Indigenous families, communities and nations across Turtle Island.  

Red dress donations for the exhibit are welcome and encouraged.

All community members are invited to visit and observe the Red Dress Exhibit to honour the memories of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people across Canada.

May 7 - 9
Conference: Migration Disrupted
Organized by TMU research programs CERC Migration and Bridging Divides, Migration Disrupted brings together an interdisciplinary group of researchers and leaders from Canadian and international civil society, business and government to reflect on the implications of the rapid development of advanced digital technologies for migrant integration in Canada. In the spirit of collaboration and to create opportunities for learning and networking, this year’s conference will have a mix of panel discussions, audience Q&As, fireside chats and more! 

May 8 
IMC Spring/Summer Exhibition Opening Reception

Our spring/summer exhibition season launches with an opening reception on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, spotlighting  the conceptualist works of acclaimed Canadian photographer Ken Lum in his Scotiabank Photography Award (external link)  exhibition. Other exhibitions include: A display of the fascinating histories of photography and privacy in Hypervisibility (external link) ; Moving images of nearly identical Ford Motor Company towns in Streamlined (external link) ; Werner Wolff’s practice as a commercial photographer in postwar America in Working Machines (external link) ; and finally, a set of mixed media works by emerging artists in In Dimension (external link) . These exhibits are free and open to the public.

May 8 
Flourishing: A Mixer for Black Alumni and Friends
TMU hosts its second Flourishing Mixer, a special event celebrating Black alumni and friends of the university. Community members are invited to connect with fellow graduates and make new friends in downtown Toronto. Let’s come together to imagine a bright future with leaders at your alma mater! 

May 8 
TTCxTMU Social Policy Challenge
The first-ever TTCxTMU Social Policy Challenge has arrived!  The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has partnered with TMU’s School of Social Work to launch a groundbreaking social policy challenge event. TTC riders are facing multifaceted social issues — and five undergraduate teams are ready with innovative solutions. Come out on May 8 to watch next-gen social workers pitch fresh solutions to the TTC! 

May 9 
DAS 2024 Year End Show
Are you fond of architecture and design? Then visit TMU’s annual Department of Architectural Science (DAS) Year End Show! Presenting a culmination of the 2023-2024 academic term, the DAS will be showcasing the impressive and cutting-edge works of top students in all four years of study and at the graduate level, including architectural models, photos and digital presentations. Check out the hard work of the Toronto architectural community, and celebrate the year's best and brightest!

The DAS Year-End show, spanning two storeys of the Architecture Building, collects and displays the models, drawings, and digital presentations produced in response to a variety of major themes studied throughout the year. 

May 9 - 15 
De-Escalating Potentially Violent Situations
Open to TMU students, faculty, staff and community members, this is an intensive all-day session . Learning from a combination of in-depth discussion and interactive, scenario-based training, participants will gain the knowledge and develop the skills to recognize, assess, de-escalate and respond to potentially violent situations, while prioritizing personal safety. All acquired skills are built upon progressively throughout the series, so make sure to attend both sessions to obtain a certificate of completion! 

May 16 
Learn to K-Pop Program

If you’re a fan of Blackpink or BTS, here’s your chance to try K-Pop dance choreography in The Learn-To K-Pop program beginning in May. If you’re just starting out, don’t sweat it! Before registering, try out the free trial class on Thursday, May 9 in the Recreation and Athletic Centre (RAC). This program is open to all students, so no need to worry about perfection – it's all about enjoying the music, having a great time, and leaving with a smile on your face! 

May 21 
The Magic of Research Collaboration: Building Local and Global Teams and Networks
As part of the Empowering Women in Academia at TMU speaker series, join Alison Matthews David, professor and graduate program director of the MA fashion program in the School of Fashion, as she explores strategies for creative collaborations across disciplines and career stages. 

May 30 
CEA 2024 : Toronto Metropolitan University
Known as a cornerstone event of the Canadian Economics Association, join us for a program of state of the art lectures, special sessions, and academic mingling at the 58th annual Canadian Economics Association (CEA) conference. Hosted by the Department of Economics at TMU from May 30 to June 1, 2024.
