About the School of Medicine (SoM)

It’s time to strengthen and revitalize the discipline of Family Medicine. Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) School of Medicine is being designed to shift the paradigm of healthcare delivery and improve the well-being of individuals, families and communities. With a community-driven, intentionally inclusive approach, the new school will train doctors whose cultural awareness and humility are as crucial as their medical skills.

Led by Dr. Teresa M. Chan, a forward-thinking educational leader, TMU’s School of Medicine will draw on the university’s commitment to community, equity, and innovation to address rapidly changing healthcare needs. The School will train a new generation of physicians who are ready to learn, to adapt, and ultimately to be agents of change.

Work across the School of Medicine will be supported by its Social Accountability office to ensure a focus on Black community health, Indigenous community health, anti-racism, anti-ableism, disability inclusion and universal design, anti-homophobia and transphobia, to create a positive health environment for LGBTQ2SI+ and to serve and work in partnership with historically under-represented and under-served communities as a positive space.

Brampton and its surrounding area, the Peel Region, are part of the Treaty Lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit.  We acknowledge that these lands are also the shared space of Anishinabek, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, Ojibway/Chippewa and Métis peoples.

The opportunity

The Director of FM/FM-ES Curriculum and Clinical Faculty Development (“Director”) oversees the coordination of curriculum and clinical faculty development portfolios for the FM and FM-ES Residency Programs. Ensures curriculum alignment with competency frameworks, and leads clinical faculty development initiatives based on the feedback of Residents and Clinical Faculty. The Director reviews feedback during semi-annual reviews and with regular rotation and academic curricula updates, ensuring alignment with the CFPC Triple C Competency-Based Curriculum.  The Director would review feedback from the residents which will provide guidance for future clinical faculty development sessions.

Qualifications

Minimum level of education and specialty/discipline required

  • Completion of a Doctor of Medicine Degree or equivalent.
  • Must be either a Family Physician (CCFP) or Family Physician - Enhanced Skills (CCFP-CAC) or alternatively can be a Royal College Physician (FRCP or FRCS) with involvement in Family Medicine education, especially in the areas of curriculum development and/or clinical faculty development. 
  • A Masters degree in Education (or equivalent) would be considered an asset. The Clinician Educator Area of Focused Competence Diploma will be considered equivalent to Masters level training in education. If one of these credentials has not been obtained, a willingness to develop and demonstrate competency as an educator by applying for the Clinician Educator Area of Focused Competence Diploma through the Practice Eligible route will be supported.

Minimum number of years and type/area of experience required

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a clinician educator within the discipline.
  • Effective administrative and leadership responsibilities in Family Medicine.

Required certifications, designations or licences to complete the key responsibilities of the position

  • A valid and current licence to practise medicine in Ontario.
  • Hold or be eligible to hold an appointment at a TMU medicine-affiliated clinical partner institution or academic health centre.
  • Hold or be eligible to hold a part time clinical faculty appointment with the SoM.
  • Hold a certification (CCFP) or fellowship (FCFP) through the College of Family Physicians of Canada. 

Required skills and demonstrated knowledge

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Experience in curricular program development, implementation, and evaluation, preferably within a healthcare or academic setting.
  • Experience in clinical faculty development, implementation, and evaluation, preferably within a healthcare or academic setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport, establish trust, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Commitment to promoting equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in all aspects of curricular and clinical faculty development programming.
