Julia Hanigsberg was appointed Vice President, Administration and Finance, effective October 1, 2010. In this role, Julia oversees the Administration and Finance Group and its work in supporting Ryerson University’s priorities and developing a people-first environment for all students, faculty and staff. Notable milestones since Julia became Vice President include the opening of the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens and the Ryerson Image Centre – part of the university’s energetic city-building commitment.
Prior to becoming Vice President, Julia served as General Counsel and Secretary of the Ryerson Board of Governors (2006-2010). During the 2008-2009 academic year, she was also the Interim Dean of The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education.
Before joining Ryerson in 2006, Julia worked for the Ontario government as Counsel and Special Advisor to the Secretary of Cabinet, Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General and Counsel in the Policy Division of the Ministry of the Attorney General. She was Chief of Staff to the Attorney General of Ontario from 2003 to 2005. Immediately prior to her appointment to Ryerson University, Julia was Visiting Professor of Law and Government at Osgoode Hall Law School.
Julia holds a BCL and LLB from McGill's Faculty of Law (where she was Editor-in-Chief of the McGill Law Journal), and an LLM from Columbia University Law School (where she held a Fulbright fellowship and a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada fellowship). Following her graduation from law school, Julia clerked for Justice Peter Cory of the Supreme Court of Canada. Julia has authored several articles and published a collection of essays (with Sara Ruddick).
Also very active in her community, Julia is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. She is also a member of the board of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and serves on the DiverseCity Steering Committee, the Steering Committee of the Greater Toronto Civic Action Alliance, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Finance & Economic Competitiveness Committee, the McGill Law Journal Advisory Committee, and the Dean’s Advisory Council of the McGill University Faculty of Law.
