Expectations in the Classroom

Every instructor or program may have their own rules so please ensure that you find out how he/she wishes to run his/her course. The following are guidelines for creating a positive learning environment:

  • If computers are allowed to be used in the classroom, be respectful and ensure you are not distracting others around you by watching movies, playing video games, engaging in social media, etc....It would be ideal if all those using computers sat in the last rows of the classroom.
  • The aim of attending the class is to acquire knowledge about the course. With that in mind, ensure that you are focused on the lecture and not engaging in side conversations that may distract others and the individual(s) lecturing.
  • Try to be on time for your classes. Doors constantly opening and closing can be distracting and could impact someone’s train of thought. Many instructors may not allow late students in at all.
  • Ensure that your cell phone is off when in the class. Ringing can be very distracting and in some instances, cell phone signals can negatively interact with existing technology in the classroom. Most courses have a break that you can use to check for messages or important calls.
  • If allowed, many students will eat food in class. If you choose to do so, please ensure that you are respectful and be as quiet as possible.
  • Many instructors encourage questions in class. If you have a question, please raise your hand and wait for direction from your instructor to proceed.
  • You may find some students will challenge an instructor’s point of view or disagree with something an instructor has taught or said. This is quite common and as long as it is done respectfully it can create very interesting and thought provoking discussions in class.
  • Instructor-student relationships may be seen as more informal than you are used to. Many instructors will ask to be called by their first names, whereas others may choose to go by Dr. and their last name. Your instructor will make clear their preferences in the first day of class.  When in doubt, please address them by Dr., Mr., or Ms., and their last name.
  • Attire: There is no dress code or uniform at Ryerson. Some students and instructors will dress very casually and comfortably, whereas some will be dressed professionally, and others according to their religious beliefs.
  • If you bring any food or waste into the classroom with you, please ensure that you clean up after yourself. All desks and rooms should be left tidy and ready for the next group of students to come in.
