Accessibility
AODA Legislation and Background
Ontario has new legislation about accessibility. It's called the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. The Act is a follow up to the Ontarians with Disabiltiies Act, 2001.
The goal is for Ontario to be fully accessible by 2025. In order to accomplish this, a series of standards will be successively implemented, four of which apply to Ryerson University:
- Customer Service
- Information and Communications
- Employment, and
- Built Environment
As a result of the legislation, businesses and organizations who provide goods and services to people in Ontario will have to meet certain accessibility standards as outlined in the legislation.
The Customer Service Standard has already become law and designated public service organizations, including universities, must be in compliance by January 1, 2010. There are very few schools/departments or faculty/staff who do not provide some form of service that would be covered under the standard.
You can find more information about the legislation and standards on the Ministry of Community and Social Services, Accessibility Directorate website.
