In Celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Idling: A Transit Story

This is a FREE event

Idling is a documentary that chronicles the lack of accessible transportation in the province, with a focus on London, Ontario. Follow Jeff on his mission to bring about the kind of change the disabled population desperately needs by driving his wheelchair over 650km from his home in London, Ontario to the nation's capital in Ottawa. Followed by a Q&A with Jeff Preston

Elevator out of Service: Campus Store Parking Garage
Oct 17, 2011

The elevator at the Campus Store Parking Garage at 300 Victoria Street will unfortunately be out of service until at least Tuesday, October 18, 2011. This unscheduled outage is necessary as Schindler works to confirm a potential leak in the hydraulic oil system. If a longer outage is required, an updated notice will be posted on Tuesday, October 18.

While the elevator is out of service, pedestrian access to the upper levels of the parking garage is by stairs only. Anyone using the internal ramp circulation to access the upper levels should beware of vehicles, and exercise extreme caution.

Design Competition: CONNECT EnAbling Change Project

The Design Exchange in partnership with the Government of Ontario is showcasing a provincial post-secondary design competition called CONNECT: EnAbling Change. The competition raises awareness about the importance of universal design principles in all design disciplines. This public event features Dr. Carol Padden a professor from the Department of Communication and the University of California in San Diego. Dr. Carol Padden is a MacArthur Fellow and a linguist whose research focuses on the unique structure and evolution of sign languages—how they differ from spoken language and from each other—and on the specific social implications of signed communication. Frazee honoured for contributions to disability movement

Professor Emerita Catherine Frazee, disability studies, will be honoured by Independent Living Canada, a non-profit organization that supports persons with disabilities, at its 25th anniversary celebration in November. Frazee is among several individuals to be recognized for contributing significantly to the history and movement of independent living in Canada.




AODA Update
June 29, 2011

On June 3rd the Ministry of Community and Social Services announced the release of the Integrated Accessibility Standards under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. Following the legislation of the Customer Service Regulation in 2007, this regulation combines the Information & Communication, Employment and Transportation Standards. [Full Story]



Ryerson leads provincial push to share alternate format materials

The Ryerson Library is working with the Ministries of Education and Training, Colleges and Universities to expand its alternate format service for students with disabilities. As the province continues its effort to become fully accessible by 2025 with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Ryerson's commitment to providing alternate formats fulfills one of its key standards: information and communications. Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation changes disability studies with endowed postdoctoral fellowship
