Faculty Responsibilities

As faculty, we are in a strong position to role model qualities and behaviours inherent to Academic Integrity. Our actions provide a clear message to students, GAs and TAs about our standards and expectations. Faculty members are in a unique position to influence students from the first class.

Academic Integrity can be reinforced and placed in context through the following:

• Explain how plagiarism and cheating harms all students and can ultimately reflect on the value of the degree awarded

• Demonstrate and foster a climate of trust within the classroom

• Encourage students to embrace the values inherent in Academic Integrity

• Take visible actions to detect dishonesty so that students know you will not tolerate cheating

• If cheating is suspected, respond swiftly with formal action (refer to the Student Code of Academic Conduct)

Our responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following Ten Principles of Academic Integrity for Faculty1 suggested by Don McCabe and Gary Pavela at the Center for Academic Integrity

Supplementing the Ten Responsibilities listed above, McCabe, Trevino and Butterfield (1999)2 compiled a list of suggestions from students--aimed at faculty members—to address the problem of academic misconduct in the classroom
