Alumni Relations is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2016 Alumni Achievement Awards. The awards honour outstanding Ryerson graduates who have not only excelled in their careers, but have also made a significant contribution to their profession, their community and their country. The recipients will be honoured in a special ceremony on Thursday February 11, 2016 at 6:00pm.
2016 Alumni Awards of Distinction
Lynn Factor, Social Work ‘80
Child and Youth Advocate
Driven by her unflagging commitment to social justice, Lynn Factor has devoted over 35 years to improving services and programs for society’s most vulnerable children. Presently Lynn serves as Child Witness Advocate with the Boost Child & Youth Advocacy Centre (CYAC), preparing child victims and witnesses of crime to testify in criminal court. She is Chair of the Board of the Children’s Aid Foundation and a Board Member for Covenant House. She has been named to the Order of Ontario, and received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws and an Arbour Award from University of Toronto. She has been an active member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at Ryerson in the Faculty of Community Services since 2009.
Justin Poy, RTA ‘93
Marketer and Philanthropist
Justin Poy has been busy since he graduated from Ryerson in 1993 with his degree in Radio & Television Arts. He is President and Creative Director of The Justin Poy Agency, a full service award-winning marketing and advertising agency based in Toronto. Justin is also very active in charitable and community efforts, establishing himself early on as a leader and role model in the Chinese Canadian community. He sits on more than 20 boards and committees, and participates in many philanthropic causes. He is a recipient of the Chinese Canadian Legend Award and received the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals for his outstanding community service and philanthropy.
Robert Schauer, Business Management ‘97
Since graduation, Robert Schauer has risen quickly within the corporate ranks. Today Rob is CFO & Treasurer for all BMO’s mutual funds and ETFs in Canada. As Head of Investment Fund Operations, he oversees operations for more than $150 billion in assets under administration. He is regularly requested to speak at industry leading events, such as Investment Fund Institute of Canada (IFIC) Annual Conference and participates as a leader in industry on important task force committees, including Chair of the Investment Funds Standing Committee with CPA Canada.
2016 Isadore Sharp Outstanding Recent Graduate Award
Andrew Cividino, Image Arts ‘06
Andrew Cividino grew up in Dundas, Ontario and attended the film production program at Ryerson University. His short film We Ate the Children Last was selected by TIFF as one of Canada’s Top Ten shorts of 2011. Sleeping Giant, based on his 2014 Top Ten short of the same name, was one of only seven selected to be part of Cannes Critics’ Week in the feature-length category. Andrew’s film was also was featured at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Canadian First Feature Film.

Zanele Muholi, Documentary Media (MFA) ‘10
Photographer and Visual Activist
A graduate from Ryerson’s very first graduating year in Documentary Media, Zanele Muholi has become a world-recognized photographer and visual activist. Her Ryerson thesis mapped the visual history of black lesbian identity and politics in post-Apartheid South Africa and much of her work is about bringing visibility of LGBTI persons in the black community. Recognized internationally for both her photography and her activism, in March 2013 Zanele was given the Index on Censorship - Freedom of Expression art award in London, and in August the Mbokodo Award for Creative Photography. Her most recent awards come from the Prince Claus Fund in Amsterdam, and the International Center of Photography's 2016 Infinity Award for Documentary and Photojournalism.

Jillian McKinley, Business Management ‘07
Human Resources Specialist
Jillian founded the Ryerson HR Alumni Association (RHRAA) soon after her graduation, in 2011. Under her leadership, the group has hosted a number of wonderful events, including the NKE study sessions and HR Analytics and Succession Planning events, as well as the TRSM Business Alumni Skate. Her group has also developed a HR Mentorship Program and partnered with the Canadian HR Press to sponsor a HR Student Award. Jillian, along with her team, created a campaign entitled “HUG” - or Help Us Grow as a fun way for Ryerson alumni and industry to give back financially to the university. It’s a testament to her hard work and dedication that she has started and maintained a strong association for her alma mater.
