Current Students

Arts and Contemporary Studies: Curriculum Overview

To complete your degree, you must take 40 courses in total. There are four different types of courses at Ryerson, as listed on the table below (Required, Professional Electives, Professionally-Related Electives, Open Electives, and Liberal Studies). To complete your degree, you must take the right number of courses of each type.

Required Courses

 

You must complete each of the following in the recommended order:

  • First Year: ACS 100; ACS 103; SSH 105; ACS 200; SSH 205; ACS 106 or FRE or SPN credit
  • Second Year: ACS 300; SSH 301; ACS 400; ACS 401
  • Third Year: ACS 500
  • Fourth Year: Capstone Course (i.e. ACS 800; ACS/FRE/PHL/HST/ENG 900)

Professional Electives

Table I )

You must complete 11 courses from Table I.  If you wish, you may select your courses in order to complete one of the Options below or remain as a generalist.

To see the specific requirements for each option, see Table I. You may complete only one Option.

Professionally-Related Electives

( You must complete 7-11 courses fromt Table II )

  • You must complete 7 courses from Table II.
  • If you wish, you may select your courses appropriately in order to complete a minor.
  • If you want to complete a minor, pay very careful attention to the specific requirements for that minor.
  • You do not need to complete a minor, if you don't want to.
  • You may complete only one minor.

Open Electives
(TABLE I and II)

  • You must complete 4 courses from Table I and II
  • Can be used for additional courses from Table I or II OR one single table.

Liberal Studies

(You must complete 6 courses )

  • You must do 3 courses from Table A and 3 courses from Table B.
  • If you are in one of the subject-based Options (English, French, History, and Philosophy), you may not take any courses in that subject for credit towards your Liberal Studies requirements: you must take your 6 Liberal Studies courses in other subjects.

Choosing your option

If you want an option to appear on your transcript, you must officially enroll in your option on RAMSS. If you cannot change or select an option through RAMSS, just fill out this form and hand it in to Enrollment Services.
