ACS International

Got the travel bug? Interested in international issues? Many ACS students are, and there are lots of ways for you to expand your horizons! Below is a list of various international opportunities for ACS students. Some of them (like the exchange programs), involve going away, but others can be done right here in Toronto! For example, you can mentor an international student, or get involved with Ryerson’s International Issues Discussions Series.

1. The Ryerson International (formerly the Office of International Affairs) offers many resources for students who are interested in participating in
   • exchange programs,
   • summer abroad programs, and
   • working abroad.
   
   
2. The Ontario International Education Opportunity Scholarships (OIEOS) program provides $2,500 to students in financial need who wish to embark on international academic exchanges. This year, $200,000 was granted to 81 students.
    
3. International Services for Students (ISS) provides support services for registered international students at Ryerson, and promotes international awareness to the Ryerson community.
    
4. The International Conference and Research Support Fund (ICRSF) encourages students, particularly at the graduate level, to attend conferences, present papers and conduct research abroad. After approaching their department or faculty for funding, students can apply for matching funding up to $1,500 from RI. (Although this fund has a special emphasis on graduate students, ACS students have been successful in applying for money from this fund before.)
    
5. Ryerson International Summer Experience Fund (RISEF) will provide $2,000 to 25 undergraduate students to participate in four-week international experiences in support of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Experiences include unpaid international placements, internships, and international research projects or volunteer programs. (ACS students have been successful in applying for this program.
      
6. The History Travel Award supports one ACS student to travel to Germany each year (funds permitting), and to take courses for degree credit at FUBis , the Free University of Berlin’s summer program.
    
7. It is possible to take courses at a different university (in Canada or in a different country) and to have these courses credited towards your degree in ACS. To do this, you must request, in advance, a Letter of Permission from the ACS Program Director.
    
8. Each year, students from the Faculty of Arts can apply to participate in the Alternative Spring Break program, which takes a group of students to a developing country to do community-building and educational outreach work.
    
9. Each year, a group of students work together to plan Ryerson’s International Issues Discussion Series, which brings in distinguished speakers to lecture and lead discussions on various topics. For more information, or to get involved, contact Dr. Arne Kislenko in the History Department.
