Betinho Project lecture by Cecilia Rocha- February 2010

In marking International Development Week, Dr. Rocha present on "Food Policy in Brazil: Successful Strategies in Combatting Hunger". Dr. Rocha spoke on the success of Brazil in achieving the Millennium Development Goal of reducing hunger and overall poverty in the past fifteen years. This lecture was based on her presentation at the Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on the occasion of the World Food Summit in Rome in November 2009. Click here for Rocha's presentation.
Betinho Project lecture by Renato Maluf and Luciene Burlandy - September 2008

In mid-September 2008, seven researchers traveled from Brazil to spend one week visiting Toronto partners, holding project meetings, and giving public lectures on their respective work in Brazil. Ryerson University hosted an afternoon of Betinho Lectures delivered by Renato Maluf, President of Brazilian National Council for Food and Nutrition Security (CONSEA), and Dr. Luciene Burlandy, Co-Director of the Reference Centre for Food and Nutrition Security at the Fluminense Federal University, Rio de Janeiro. Following this lecture were presentations from the Social Services for Commerce (SESC) in Ceará, Brazil, and the Municipal Secretariat for Food Policy and Supplies (SMAAB) of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Their visit was funded by a grant from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
Betinho Project lecture by Patrus Ananias - June 2008
The Brazilian Minister of Social Development & Fight Against Hunger spoke June 12, 2008 at Ryerson University on the policies of food and nutrition security in Brazil. Recently, programs under the Ministry of Social Development and Fight against Hunger (MDS) have been credited for reducing the incidence of hunger and malnutrition, as well as extreme poverty rates in the country. Patrus Ananias has been at the helm of MDS since 2004. Before that, in the 1990s, he was the mayor of Belo Horizonte, overseeing the establishment of a comprehensive plan for food and nutrition policy in that city. Today, Belo Horizonte is internationally recognized as a leader for innovative programs in this area.
