Analytical chemistry: Development, evaluation, and validation of novel techniques to identify and quantify different physical and chemical forms (i.e. chemical speciation) of toxic substances in environmental samples, including air, water (e.g., freshwaters, rain water, snow-melt) and solid samples (e.g., sediments, soils, biological samples).

Environmental chemistry: Biogeochemistry of toxic substances in the natural environment. Different chemical forms of an element have different physical, chemical properties, and different reactivity. Knowledge of the distribution among the different physical and chemical forms of an element is therefore essential for predicting their mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity and for assessing their environmental impacts. We apply the novel methodologies to identify and quantify toxic substances present in the environmental samples, to study the source, transport, transformation, and fate of toxic substances in the natural environment, and to assess the impacts of toxic substances on ecosystem and human health.
