As a chemistry and biology professional, your efforts help create and improve products and systems. Your skills are needed everywhere from environmental sciences to pharmaceuticals. The changing face of biology, especially in molecular biology and biotechnology, means intriguing new territory is opening up all the time.
If you'd like to put your inquisitive nature to work in a growing field, this is the program for you. Applied Chemistry and Biology will prepare you with an up-to-date curriculum in the area of biology and chemistry, that combines theories of applied chemical and biological sciences with actual practice.

In the first year of the program, student study the fundamental concepts and skills in chemistry, biology, and microbiology. Mathematics, physics and computer applications are included to provide a broad science background.

The second year includes courses in biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and analytical chemistry and microbiology. Statistics provide the basis for understanding experimental data and for designing complex experiments.

Third and fourth year students continue to study applied chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and biotechnology with an emphasis on laboratory work.

Practical technical and communication skills are particular feature of the program. Laboratory work is emphasized throughout. The co-op option gives the students and opportunity to obtain practical experience in their field and a better understanding of their profession. This work experience puts the co-op graduate in an advantageous position to obtain permanent employment compared to graduates from traditional programs.

The Department offers a co-operative program which provides the graduating students with 20 months of work experience that enhances their organizational and technical abilities as well as their oral and written communication skills.

Although the Department cannot guarantee a placement, it provides major assistance in locating suitable positions and counseling of students in their search for suitable jobs. This co-operative programs enables the students to earn competitive wages to offset the cost of a university education.

Students in the Chemistry and Biology program who have completed the first year of the program and who wish to take the co-op option must apply through the Department of Chemistry, Biology and Chemical Engineering for admission to the co-operative program prior to the beginning of the second year. Enrollment is the co-op program is limited. Admission will be base on student's grade point average.

The Bachelor of Science (Chemistry and Biology) program provides education and technical training in the chemical and biological sciences.

Graduates are employed in quality control, product development and research laboratories in chemical, food and pharmaceutical companies. The type of work includes chemical analysis and microbiological testing. Graduates are also employed in government laboratories in fields such as environmental, food and drug monitoring. Many graduates are employed by chemical and pharmaceutical companies in technical sales and service. Several courses in the program provide graduates with a suitable background to work effectively in the environmental area. An increasing number of graduates are being accepted in Faculties of Education to enter the teaching profession and several graduates continue with post-graduate studies.
