FNF 100Family Studies: Families and HealthLect: 3 hrs.
This course analyzes important changes in Canadian families and considers implications of change for food specialists and health professionals. Students will gain an understanding of the social and health implications of demographic changes in fertility, mortality, marriage and divorce, and economic shifts in employment. The course uses a life cycle model and family systems theory to understand family processes and determinants of health and well-being for individuals and families.

FNF 400Family Studies: The Social Context of Human SexualityLect: 3 hrs.
This course examines the social basis of attitudes and behaviour related to human sexuality. By applying knowledge gained from the study of current research and theory, students will increase their understanding of the roots of societal norms and values related to sexuality and in the process they will have an opportunity to expand their own awareness of the range of sexual values and behaviour. Some of the areas to be considered are: premarital, marital and non-marital sexuality; sexuality and liberation; sexuality and interpersonal relations; sex codes and personal codes; sex and gender role socialization, etc.
Prerequisite: FNF 100. Exclusion: IST 906.

FNF 401Family Studies: Canadian Family: Diversity and ChangeLect: 3 hrs.
Theoretical concepts from race and ethnic literature will be studied as a background for increasing the student’s understanding of the Canadian family in a multicultural perspective. The objective of the course is to expand the student’s awareness of the cultural variations of family patterns in Canada and to provide insights and skills that will assist them in working with or counselling families from different backgrounds in the community.
Prerequisite: FNF 100.

FST 205Family Studies: Perspectives on Professional PracticeLect: 3 hrs.
This course will explore aspects of professional practice in the different specializations available to graduates of NCFS. Major themes will include the history of home economics and its relationship to changes in family life and women’s roles, a critical perspective on professional practice, and the role of professionals as agents of change. Students will be encouraged to reflect on personal, professional, and learning experiences to enhance their understanding of course materials.

FNF 405Family Studies: Focus on Family ResearchLect: 3 hrs.
This course is a critical examination of the social, political, methodological and epistemological traditions used in family-based research. It will explore the methodological pluralism that exists within the field of inquiry, ranging from positivistic traditions to interpretive meaning-based qualitative approaches, and it will also raise questions about the ideological underpinnings which have sometimes come to define the context in which interpretive/empirical data on family life has been presented.
Prerequisites: FNF 100 or ECE 302 and FNR 300 or ECE 306 or equivalent.
