HSM 315 HSM 316
HSM 315 Health Services Mgt.: The Canadian Health System I Lect: 3 hrs. This course assumes a working knowledge of the organization and operations of the health system. It initially focuses on the client, the consumer of health services. It examines historical conceptualizations of the provider-client relationship and explores the more recent concept of an integrated client-centred continuum. The course then focuses on the major institutional and community components of the health system and their interrelationships. The roles of governments, and provincial variations in the organization, funding and provision of health services are explored.
HSM 316 Health Services Mgt.: The Canadian Health System II Lect. 3 hrs. This course examines key developments in the health system which promise substantial change in the provision of health services and the role of the health services manager. It reviews federal-provincial financial arrangements and the increasing provincial trend toward local control of health services delivery. Also addressed is the potential impact on access to services with the possible shift from an illness model characterized by professional control of an institutionally-based, curative technology, to a wellness model stressing client rights, community development and health promotion. Prerequisite: HSM 315.
