LAR 030 Lnds. Arch.: Plant Materials Lect: 1 hr./Lab: 2 hrs. The concepts introduced in ASF 100 are explored further in this course. A comprehensive study of the morphology of plant materials, the structure and classification of native and non-native plants, their environments, visual characteristics, ecological relationships, cultural requirements and use in the natural and designed landscape is undertaken. Plant materials are identified using Latin and common nomenclature. (formerly ASF 030). Prerequisite: ASF 100.
LAR 031 Lnds. Arch.: Landscape Design Lect: 1 hr./Lab: 2 hrs. In this course students develop their personal approach to Landscape Architecture history, design and practice. Students study the works and philosophies of 20th century Landscape Architects and associated professions and are required to formulate and articulate their approach to Landscape Architecture through seminar presentations.
LAR 034 Lnds. Arch.: Contemporary Issues Lect: 3 hrs. A comparative examination of the current societal issues and influences determining and affecting Landscape Architecture design, implementation and practice. Case studies used will vary in scale and application, and will examine contemporary local, national and global issues and perspectives. (formerly LAR 041).
LAR 038 Lnds. Arch.: Construction Processes Lect: 2 hrs./Lab: 1 hr. An exploration of landscape construction methods and systems including grading, drainage, cut and fill, and the preparation of landscape construction documents. Students study issues of Landscape Construction as they relate to Environmental Assessment and Impact with particular focus on the preservation of existing landscape elements. Students are required to study and produce a set of construction documents. (formerly ASF 028). Prerequisite: ASF 017.
LAR 042 Lnds. Arch.: Environmental Construction Lect: 1 hr./Lab: 2 hrs. This course is a detailed examination of site-specific landscape construction techniques and the potential impacts of these construction applications on the environment and site. Identifies appropriate and sustainable landscape construction responses, techniques and their application to specific site conditions, and diverse contexts, considering social, political and economic factors. (formerly LAR 032). Prerequisite: LAR 038.
LAR 043 Lnds. Arch.: Thesis Lab: 8 hrs. Students select appropriate topics/projects, demonstrating a multidisciplinary, applied design approach to Landscape Architecture. The projects may range from the theory and application of research design to policy issues. Projects are approved by the Department and developed in consultation with an assigned thesis Faculty Advisor. The emphasis of the thesis is on the cultivation of the students’ sphere of inquiry into the broad subject area; projects explore design issues of general importance to the applied design disciplines and society at large. Prerequisite: LAR 033. Course Weight: 4.00.
LAR 045 Lnds. Arch.: Landscape Management Lect: 2 hrs./Lab: 1 hr. The course explores the ethical relationship of Humans to the land. Develops an understanding of the processes, issues and techniques employed in managing, preserving and restoring sensitive landscape. Examples used will include current issues and case studies. The course will also examine Landscape assessment, planning, facility management and maintenance issues and techniques. (formerly LAR 035). Prerequisite: ASF 029.
LAR 108 Lnds. Arch.: History of Landscape Architecture Lect: 3 hrs. The study of the rise of landscape architecture as an art and a distinct profession, commencing with ancient history and literature as a record of the garden; painting as a record of the landscape; modern history as a record of the social forces which produced landscape architecture as the means of planning the environment for human use and enjoyment.
LAR 109 Lnds. Arch.: Landscape Ecology Lect: 2 hrs./Lab: 1 hr. This course explores the basic dynamics of Ecology through the study of varied and typical environments. The relationships between the primary factors of geology, surface deposits, hydrology, flora and fauna, together with the impact of urbanization and human activity on the natural ecosystem, are studied.
LAR 110 Lnds. Arch.: Horticulture I Lect: 2 hrs./Lab: 1 hr. This course introduces the fundamentals, principles and practices of Horticulture. Topics covered include: flowering bulbs; annuals; perennials; lawns; ground cover; woody plants and cultural requirements. Plant propagation and greenhouse structure, planting techniques and grafting, pest and disease identification and control are discussed and demonstrated in the greenhouse and testing lab. Prerequisite: ASF 030.
LAR 209 Lnds. Arch.: Landscape Ecology II Lect: 2 hrs./Lab: 1 hr. A continuation of LAR 109, with emphasis on solving problems inherited from earlier traditions of planning and design. Creative ideas which recognize natural processes, technology and human resources. The implementation and management of landscapes based upon ecological principles. Prerequisite: LAR 109.
LAR 210 Lnds. Arch.: Horticulture II Lect: 2 hrs./Lab: 1 hr. This course will continue to focus on the fundamentals of horticulture. Topics include plant pests and diseases, pruning methods, garden tools, and specialty gardens. Practical training and experimentation will be conducted in the greenhouse. Prerequisite: LAR 110.
