AIM 205Admin. Management: Database DesignLect: 3 hrs.
This course covers all aspects of implementing database applications from initial data analysis through design and implementation. Topics include logical database and physical database design as well as the application of normalization theory to relational systems. In addition, the student will learn the industry standard Structured Query Language (SQL).
Prerequisite: AIM 236. Exclusions: ITM 500 and BIS 607.

AIM 300Admin. Management: Introduction to Network ManagementLect: 1 hr./Lab: 2 hrs.
This course provides the concepts and hands-on experience necessary to configure and manage a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server network environment. Concepts examined include installing Windows 2000 Server, Active Directory, configuring access to resources, Microsoft Management Console, optimizing system performance, security. An introduction to Novell NetWare is also provided.
Prerequisite: AIM 200. Exclusion: ITM 315.

AIM 305Admin. Management: Database ApplicationsLect. 1 hr./Lab: 2 hrs.
This course is designed to instruct the student on implementing database information systems. Data structures, data editing, table relationships, form design, queries, programming and report generation will be included. Software applications in this course may include Microsoft ACCESS.
Prerequisite: ITM 200. Exclusion: ITM 320.

AIM 307Admin. Management: Information & Communications TechLect: 3 hrs.
Mkt. This course is designed for individuals who are interested in acquiring a broad perspective on marketing or policy issues. It will explore the current market environment, trends, and major players, including their strategies and prospects. Industry experts, consultants, and suppliers will provide input to course development.
Prerequisites: AIM 208 and MKT 100 or permission of the Instructor. Exclusions: ITM 515, CC8949.

AIM 308Admin. Management: Managing Information Systems & TelecomLect: 3 hrs.
This course is intended to provide students with an understanding of the critical importance of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) in today’s business environment, and the strategic, tactical, and operational management processes associated with it; current industry issues and trends; tools and techniques needed to manage ICT, including an introduction to project management; and an understanding of the human and organizational issues of ICT management. Teaching/learning methods include lectures, case analyses and presentations, and completing a project management assignment using a software program.
Prerequisites: AIM 208 and AIM 236. Exclusion: ITM 505.

AIM 309Admin. Management: Developing Business SystemsLect: 2 hrs./Lab: 1 hr.
This course examines challenges and opportunities for developing business applications in organizations, using commercial software and affiliated utilities. The strategic role of business applications in enterprises is scrutinized and the impact of the deployment of IT on operational effectiveness is investigated as well. A structural, analytical project approach is used for identifying business needs and building integrated business applications to address those requirements. Emphasis will be placed on understanding business requirements; acquiring the right software tools; ensuring software compatibility and integration; developing, migrating and installing business systems and providing application training to users of the system. Extensive time will be spent on developing applications with contemporary approaches.
Prerequisite: AIM 339.

AIM 311Admin. Management: Telecommunications ApplicationsLab: 3 hrs.
This course will illustrate, through the analysis of special cases and projects, how telecommunications can meet specific business needs. These projects may include selecting wireless, internet services, voice processing, multimedia and teleconferencing. Emphasis will be placed on developing problem-solving skills, learning to evaluate different products, and applying system development methodologies to a range of technologies designed to meet varying needs. The course will also explore implementation issues for selected technologies.
Prerequisite: AIM 208 and AIM 236. Exclusion: ITM 705.

AIM 337Admin. Management: Gender Dynamics in OrganizationsLect: 3 hrs.
This course examines how assumptions about gender differences influence how we perceive and behave toward male and female workers; how structural determinants shape organizational behaviour and affect women and men differently, and how organizational practices are based on the male normative model. The purpose of the course is to bridge the gap between theories of gender, race and class-related behaviours, and management practices within the organization, in order to prepare students for a positive experience in contemporary organizational life. Topics include patriarchy, gender stereotypes, opportunity, power, and international management.
Prerequisite: AIM 235. Exclusion: AIM 037.

AIM 338Admin. Management: Business Process DesignLab: 3 hrs.
This course introduces the principles of business process reengineering. Concepts and practices in process analysis, process redesign and work management are used to assess reengineering situations prior to the implementation of information technology. Emphasis is placed on the identification of opportunities for process reengineering, development of the business case for change, the importance of teamwork, the implementation of technology to support change, and continuous process improvement. AIM 339Admin. Management: Software Evaluation MethodsLect: 2 hrs./Lab: 1 hr.
This course provides students with knowledge and experience in methods for evaluating user and business requirements for software, translating those requirements into specifications and then evaluating software against those specifications. This will be accomplished by using theoretical constructs and methodologies for analysis and comparison. Topics include questionnaire design, data analysis, task analysis, usability evaluation, design, and formulation of models of users and organizations.
Prerequisite: AIM 236. Exclusion: ITM 425.

AIM 401Admin. Management: Processes for Organizational ChangeLect: 3 hrs.
People as agents of change determine the degree to which the planned change process is effectively managed. This course uses an experiential learning approach to further develop concepts introduced in AIM 400. Case studies, group discussions, role plays and simulations increase student knowledge and experience relevant to interpersonal growth, team and intergroup development, goal setting activity, productivity interventions, and system-wide strategic change. (formerly AMS 401).
Prerequisites: AIM 137 and AIM 400.

AIM 402Admin. Management: Summer Term PracticumLab: 3 hrs.
This course requires that students obtain a summer job on their own initiative with at least 12 continuous weeks of paid employment, in work related to the program, in the summer between second and third or third and fourth year. This course is designed to provide an opportunity to apply academic learning in the work setting and to enrich their academic courses with the experiences of the workplace. Objectives are to apply and further develop analytical and problem-solving skills; develop organizing and time management skills; experience and critically evaluate the organization’s practices and management/leadership styles and observe business in action Not available to students in the Part-time and Co-op programs.
Prerequisite: Permission of School. Exclusion: ITM 702.

AIM 404Admin. Management: Voice Systems and Emerging TechnologiesLect: 3 hrs.
This course will provide in-depth coverage of key systems, PBX, Centrex, voice processing and voice services. The issues involved in selecting, installing, and maintaining such systems will be addressed.
Prerequisites: AIM 208 and AIM 236. Exclusion: ITM 520.

AIM 406Admin. Management: Managing Emerging TelecommunicationsLect: 3 hrs.
This course explores new telecommunication technologies that the network designer and manager will need to know in order to migrate and expand existing corporate LAN, MAN, and WANs. Topics for the year 2002 would include the deployment of Gigabit and 10Gigabit Ethernets, new techniques in Fiber Optic technologies and new versions of 802.11 wireless LAN technologies. The topic list will be updated yearly to reflect current industry trends.
Prerequisites: AIM 200 and AIM 236. Exclusion: ITM 710.

AIM 407Admin. Management: Strategic Issues in TelecommLect: 3 hrs.
and IT. In this course, topics addressed will vary to reflect the current market environment, but the focus will remain constant—immediate issues and emerging trends of interest to telecommunications managers. The course assumes a basic understanding of the technology and will draw heavily on practitioners in industry for its direction. In one year, for example, regulatory issues may be highlighted; in another, technology may predominate.
Prerequisite: AIM 208. Exclusion: ITM 715, CC8950.

AIM 411Admin. Management: Special Topics in TelecommunicationsLect: 3 hrs.
This course explores advanced telecommunications applications, and is constantly updated to reflect changes in priorities and developments in the market.
Prerequisites: AIM 208 and AIM 236. Exclusion: ITM 805.

AIM 427Admin. Management: Diversity in the WorkplaceLect: 3 hrs.
In this course the challenges managing a diverse workforce and the benefit developing an equity-oriented organization are explored. With a view of the changing marketplace realities facing contemporary organizations, students examine strategies for the implementation of effective diversity initiatives as they relate to employment systems and organizational culture.
Prerequisite: AIM 235 or AIM 035.

AIM 437Admin. Management: Current Issues in InfoLect: 3 hrs.
Systems Mgt. The objective of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to keep abreast of new topics of importance as they emerge in the field. Topics will vary from year to year and will be announced. Method of instruction will vary depending upon the topics offered.
Prerequisite: AIM 308. Exclusion: ITM703.

AIM 440Admin. Management: Fundamentals of LearningLect: 3 hrs.
Adult educators, regardless of their roles (trainers, instructors, program developers or leaders), or the settings in which they work (business, industry, non-profit, government, or educational institutions) are expected to have general knowledge and competencies related to the field of practice. This course is designed to help students develop an understanding of, and appreciation for, the nature of learning, and to expose students to some major concepts and practices in adult learning. Students will acquire the general knowledge, skills, and attitudes expected of adult educators, and will gain an overview of some traditional approaches to learning, including techniques and methods for facilitating learning.
Prerequisite: AIM 429 or MHR 733. Exclusion: MHR 634.

AIM 441Admin. Management: Training Needs Assessment and EvaluationLect. 3 hrs.
This course offers systematically organized principles and practices of how to analyze human performance problems, including discussion of such topics as strategy, tactics, human performance technology, methods of investigation, analysis of data, reporting results to management, and formulation of training objectives. Students also will explore both formative and summative methods of evaluation, including data collection, and will learn to make decisions based on results of each phase.
Prerequisite: AIM 429. Exclusion: MHR 650.

AIM 442Admin. Management: Instructional DesignLect: 3 hrs.
Instructional design is the systematic process of translating principles of learning and instruction into plans for instructional materials and activities. In this course you will learn concepts, principles, and practices of instructional design and will apply them in a design of your choosing. We will also examine message design in a variety of instructional media including print, overhead transparencies, computer presentations, interactive multimedia, video and distance learning.
Prerequisite: AIM 440 and AIM 441. Exclusion: MHR 636.

AIM 443Admin. Management: Instructional DeliveryLect. 3 hrs.
This course provides the opportunity for students to develop knowledge and skills, competence and confidence in delivering training and facilitating learning. The course is experiential, in that students pursue their own learning goals, participate in preparing and delivering in-class seminars, meet with training experts, and learn about delivery trends through selected readings. Students explore, experiment, and critically examine training and development activities to expand their personal training ‘tool kits’.
Prerequisite: AIM 429, AIM 440 and AIM 442. Exclusion: MHR 637.

AIM 444Admin. Management: Consulting SkillsLect: 3 hrs.
During this course, learners will explore consulting process models and their application to business situations. Learners also will examine consulting skills, roles, styles and services. They will have an opportunity to contract the scope of consulting projects, research organizational development theories and concepts, and enhance their probing and diagnostic skills. This course is intended for learners who already have acquired training and development skills and knowledge and want to provide consulting services within their organization or to a range of clients.
Prerequisites: AIM 441, AIM 442 and AIM 443. Exclusion: MHR 636.

AIM 445Admin. Management: Multimedia ApplicationsLect: 2 hrs./Lab: 1 hr.
Multimedia is an important business tool. AIM 445 introduces students to the application, production, and implementation of multimedia in business. Topics include fundamentals of multimedia production such as graphics, audio and text, multimedia applications in business, and issues in the management of multimedia such as usability, design and distribution. Emphasis is on hands-on experience with multimedia applications. A multimedia development project is required.
Prerequisite: ITM 445.

AIM 670Admin. Management: Training and TechnologyLect: 3 hrs.
Training professionals may face a number of critical decisions when dealing with training technology and media. These decisions are important because of the significant expenditures, resources and time demands, as well as the impact on learner results. Students in this course will be exposed to a number of the issues involved in dealing with training technology and/or technology-intensive learning environments. By combining conceptual and hands-on viewpoints through a variety of readings, guest lectures, and actually using assessing technologies on their own merits, students will gain an awareness of training technology issues as well as become skilled in critically approaching practical problems in the training world.
Prerequisite: AIM 442. Exclusion: MHR 639.

AIM 700Admin. Management: Information Systems and Business StrategyLect: 3 hrs.
In the information economy, the way in which organizations use and manage information is often key to competitive survival in their industry. This course focuses on building an understanding of the strategic role of the information systems in supporting organizational objectives, and synthesize the students’ knowledge of management practices and information technology. This course is designed to improve the student’s skills in critically analyzing business situations, identifying opportunities to employ information technology, and developing strategies for the use of information technology. They will learn how to apply models to analyse industry dynamics, apply the process of competitive analysis to a specific company, and identify strategic information technology opportunities within an organization.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of all required courses in the first three years of the AIM program or by special permission. Exclusion: ITM 700. SAIC Students: WKT 502.

AIM 800Admin. Management: Applied Research in Information ManagementLect: 3 hrs.
This course will examine the methodologies and tools necessary for successful planning, evaluation, implementation and management of information technology. Emphasis will be placed on further developing the skills learned in AIM 700 to identify opportunities to increase the effectiveness and/or efficiency of a business unit’s operations, to increase its competitive edge, or to enhance the deployment of human and/or information resources in a corporation. Building on the industry and company analysis project from AIM 700, students will conduct a feasibility study to develop a business information system for a real-life application. Students will select an information system by applying structured systems analysis, identify organizational issues related to introducing new technologies, process re-engineering and systems implementation, and recommend the most appropriate solution.
Prerequisite: AIM 700. Exclusion: ITM 800.
