CHY 040 Chemistry: Project—Thesis Lab: 3 hrs. A research project supervised by a faculty member. An oral presentation of results and a thesis are required. Registration in this course may be restricted by the number of available projects. Prerequisite: Permission of Department.
CHY 090 Chemistry: Introductory Chemistry Lect: 3 hrs. The following topics will be covered: introduction to chemistry, atomic structure, gases and mole problems, qualitative and quantitative chemical reactions, solution chemistry.
CHY 102 Chemistry: General Chemistry Lect: 3 hrs/Lab: 1 hr. This course deals with stoichiometry, gases, liquids and solids, chemical equilibria, thermodynamics, kinetics, nuclear chemistry and electrochemistry. The treatment of these topics will emphasize problem solving and calculation.
CHY 103 Chemistry: General Chemistry I Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. Atomic Structure, Stoichiometry, Gases, Chemical Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, Aqueous Equilibria, Thermochemistry, Energy.
CHY 104 Chemistry: General Chemistry Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 1 ˝ hrs. This course deals with stoichiometry, solution composition, redox reactions, kinetics, equilibrium including aqueous equilibria, acid, bases and salts, thermochemistry, chemical bonding and an introduction to organic chemistry (study of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons).
CHY 110 Chemistry: Orientation Lect: 3 hrs. This course focuses on topics designed to improve the effectiveness of learning strategies and study skills. This course includes discussions on topics such as effective communication skills, learning styles, theory of learning and successful problem solving, career planning, the Co-op program, effective use of the library and other topics that will help students to become more resourceful and successful.
CHY 113 Chemistry: General Chemistry II Lect: 3 hrs. Electrochemistry, atomic theory, bonding, liquids and solids. Solutions, representative elements, transition metals, nuclear chemistry. Precursor: CHY 103.
CHY 142 Chemistry: Organic Chemistry I Lect. 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. This is an introductory course which is based on the functional group approach to the classification of organic compounds and includes IUPAC nomenclature, structural and stereo isomerism, and fundamental aliphatic and aromatic reactions. The laboratory includes the introduction to basic organic laboratory techniques such as melting point, recrystallization, extraction, rotary evaporation and distillation. Also included is the synthesis, isolation and purification of compounds. Precursor: CHY 103.
CHY 152 Chemistry: Introductory Organic Chemistry Lect: 3 hrs. An introductory organic chemistry course which includes the following topics: bonding, nomenclature, main functional groups, properties, reactions and characteristics of organic compounds. Precursor: CHY 104.
CHY 200 Chemistry: Organic Chemistry Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. This is an introductory course which is based on the functional group approach to the classification or organic compounds and includes IUPAC nomenclature, structural and stereo isomerism, and fundamental aliphatic and aromatic reactions. CHY 203 Chemistry: Instrumental Methods of Analysis Lect: 2 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. Instrumentation for and applications of spectroscopic, chromatographic and electro-analytical analyses are discussed. Prerequisite: CHY 103.
CHY 204 Chemistry: Biochemistry I Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 2 hrs. This course provides an introduction to the structure and function of proteins and carbohydrates, presents an overview of enzymology and bioenergetics and concludes with a study of carbohydrate metabolism. The laboratory component provides an introduction to basic techniques used in analytical biochemistry. Prerequisite: CHY 102 and CHY 211.
CHY 205 Chemistry: Biochemistry II Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 2 hrs. The course begins with a study of the structure and function of lipids and nucleic acids followed by an examination of the intermediary metabolism of lipids, proteins and nucleic acids with emphasis on the regulation of these processes. The course will conclude with a study of protein biosynthesis and an overview of applied genetics. The laboratory portion provides an introduction to more advanced biochemical techniques. Experiments include the isolation and characterization of enzymes, analysis of proteins and lipids in biological materials and the investigation of specific reactions. Prerequisite: CHY 204.
CHY 211 Chemistry: General Chemistry Laboratory Lab: 3 hrs. Introduction to chemical laboratory that includes the following topics: Mass - Volume relationship; Solution; dilution, and concentration; Acid-base titration; Hardness of water; Solubility; Reaction kinetics; Colorimetry; Determination of concentration of iron in a solution; Concentration analysis of aspirin.
CHY 213 Chemistry: Analytical Chemistry I Lect.: 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. This course concentrates on non-instrumental analytical methods and includes the following lecture topics: gravimetry, and equilibria and titration applications of acid-base, oxidation-reduction, complex-formation, and precipitation reactions. The laboratory portion of this course includes experiments based on the above topics. Prerequisite: CHY 103 and CHY 113.
CHY 223 Chemistry: Analytical Chemistry II Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. This course is a continuation of the analytical work from CHY 213, but concentrates on instrumental and analytical methods. The course introduces the student to the theory, instrumentation, and applications of: atomic and molecular spectroscopy, potentiometry (including ion-selective electrodes), and chromatography. Precursor: CHY 213.
CHY 242 Chemistry: Organic Chemistry II Lect: 3 hrs. This course covers organic synthesis, Lewis Acid Base Theory and the stability of various organic reaction intermediates. The concepts of reaction mechanisms and resonance for both aliphatic and aromatic compounds are studied in detail. Prerequisite: CHY 142.
CHY 261 Chemistry: Biochemistry Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. This course deals with the structures, functions, chemistry and food applications of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids. Also included is an introduction to enzymology (coenzymes, nomenclature and classification of enzymes and enzymatic control of biochemical reactions). The laboratory provides an introduction to the basic biochemical techniques including chromatography, electrophoresis and spectrophotometry. Precursor: CHY 242.
CHY 271 Chemistry: Organic Chemistry I Lect: 3 hrs. This is an introductory course which is based on the functional group approach to the classification of organic compounds and includes IUPAC nomenclature, isomerism, fundamental aliphatic and aromatic reactions. Industrial applications will be noted. Prerequisite: CHY 102.
CHY 272 Chemistry: Organic Chemistry II Lect: 2 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. This course covers the basic reaction mechanisms, the concept of resonance and a detailed study of aromatic chemistry. Also included is an introduction to synthesis. Industrial applications will be noted. The laboratory includes the introduction to basic organic techniques. Some preparation work is included. Precursor: CHY 271.
CHY 330 Chemistry: Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 1˝ hrs. A course which emphasizes an understanding of the principles necessary for the selection of instruments and procedures for analytical applications and a critical evaluation of the data from such methods. Topics include atomic and molecular spectroscopy (atomic absorption and emission, UV/VIS/IR absorption); X-Ray spectroscopy and X-Ray diffraction; electrometric methods; automatic and on-stream analysis. Prerequisites: CHY 213, CHY 223 and PCS 219.
CHY 331 Chemistry: Basic Chromatography Lect: 2 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. This course deals with the basic principles of chromatographic separations from a fundamental, analytical viewpoint. Lecture topics include general theory and equations of chromatographic methods, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and ion-exchange methods. Laboratory experiments will provide a back up to the theory of GC and HPLC and will demonstrate the variety of chromatographic techniques available for routine use. Prerequisites: CHY 213 and CHY 223.
CHY 337 Chemistry: Spectroscopy in Organic Chemistry Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 1˝ hrs. The application of spectroscopic methods to structure determination. Topics include ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectrometry. Prerequisites: CHY 242 and PCS 219.
CHY 344 Chemistry: Inorganic Chemistry I Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. Physical and chemical properties of the main group elements and inorganic compounds are related to their electronic structures; principles are exemplified by technologically important substances and reactions. Topics include symmetry, covalent and ionic bonding theories, a survey of solid state structures and a discussion of secondary chemical interactions. The laboratory will emphasize the preparation of various main group inorganic compounds by important techniques (including vacuum and inert atmosphere synthesis) and product characterization by standard spectroscopic methods. Prerequisite: CHY 113. Corequisite: CHY 330.
CHY 361 Chemistry: Intermediary Metabolism Lect: 3 hrs/Lab: 3 hrs. A course in the principles of enzymology, bioenergetics and carbohydrate metabolism. Enzymology topics include the structure, function and regulation of enzymes and Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The fundamentals of bioenergetics and intermediary metabolism are discussed in the context of the integration and control of catabolism and anabolism. The course concludes with a detailed examination of carbohydrate chemistry with emphasis on the chemical logic and the regulation of these pathways. The laboratory introduces students to more advanced biochemical techniques. Topics include the isolation and characterization of polysaccharides and the kinetic analysis of enzymes. Prerequisite: CHY 261.
CHY 362 Chemistry: Intermediary Metabolism II Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. The major topics introduced in the lectures are membrane structure and transport systems and the metabolism of lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. A review of DNA replication and protein synthesis will also be included. The laboratory focuses on chromatography and electrophoresis as used to separate and analyze proteins. Students are required to write a major report(s), make an oral presentation and present a poster. Precursor: CHY 361.
CHY 381 Chemistry: Physical Chemistry I Lect: 3 hrs. The three laws of thermodynamics; free energy and chemical equilibria; thermodynamics of solutions. Prerequisites: CHY 103, CHY 113 and MTH 019.
CHY 382 Chemistry: Physical Chemistry II Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. Topics included are: rates and mechanism of reactions; adsorption and heterogeneous catalysts. The laboratory consists of experiments dealing with thermochemistry; electrochemical measurements; properties of liquids and solutions; kinetics of reactions and surface phenomena. Precursor: CHY 381.
CHY 423 Chemistry: Environmental Science Lect: 3 hrs. Air pollution—a study of the major sources of air pollution. Methods of air sampling and air monitoring. The sampling and analysis of air, vapours, fumes and smoke. Incinerator design and evaluation. Testing and design of abatement components and systems. Water pollution—a study of the major sources of water pollution. Methods of sampling and analyzing water and waste water. Design and evaluation of waste treatment systems. Solid waste—methods of disposal. Other disposal problems. Prerequisite: Permission of Department.
CHY 428 Chemistry: Food Process Science Lect: 3 hrs. This course will deal with the principles of food processing technology. Topics included will be unit operations in the food industry, food preservation by heat, cold, dehydration and fermentation, food quality factors and food storage. Some basic engineering calculations will be introduced to enable students to handle simple mass and energy balances as related to food processing. Corequisite: CHY 434.
CHY 431 Chemistry: Applied Analytical Chemistry Lect: l hr./Lab: 2 hrs. Lectures will include aspects of chemical equilibria, in particular protonation equilibria; buffers, natural and synthetic phase separation equilibria; non-aqueous solvent systems; applications of pH control and complexation to extraction and chromatographic systems will be cited where appropriate. Experiments may represent: inorganic structural elucidation; analytical extraction techniques, including pH and complexation effects; volatilization and vacuum distillation techniques; applications to natural and synthetic products analysis; electrochemical methods. Prerequisite: CHY 223.
CHY 434 Chemistry: Analytical Chemistry of Complex Samples Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. Sampling techniques, chemical analysis and statistical methods for analyzing major and minor analytes in complex matrices. Relevance to food, environmental, clinical, or industrial samples will be discussed. Laboratory work will introduce techniques such as Sohxlet and differential extraction, and methods for reducing matrix effects. Prerequisite: CHY 261.
CHY 435 Chemistry: Chemical Instrumentation II Lect: 3 hrs. A number of rapidly evolving instrumental techniques significant to the chemical industry are studied with a specific reference to what is currently state-of-the-art. Some of the important techniques such as capillary GC, HPLC, Mossbauer, X-ray dispersive, FT-IR, C-13 NMR, MS, electron microscopy and microprobe analysis, etc. will be covered. Prerequisite: CHY 330.
CHY 436 Chemistry: Pharmaceutical Chemistry Lect: 3 hrs. This course provides an introduction to medicinal chemistry. Topics examined include classification, pharmacokinetics, mechanisms of action (pharmacodynamics), interactions, formulations, production and design of drugs, including biotechnology drugs. Drugs are grouped by their common mechanism(s) of action and discussed as such. Prerequisite: CHY 361.
CHY 437 Chemistry: Organic Chemistry Lect: 3 hrs. This course emphasizes the stereochemistry of common reaction mechanisms. Also included is enolate and carbanion chemistry, Diels-Alder reaction in detail, heterocyclic chemistry, polycyclic compounds and a survey of the mechanisms of a large number of name reactions. Prerequisite: CHY 242.
CHY 439 Chemistry: Food Product Development Lect: 3 hrs. A course in the principles and practice of food product development. Topics will include marketing, formulating, sensory evaluation, quality control, packaging and pilot plant scale up. Students will be given experiments in developing a food product through participating in group project work. Prerequisite: CHY 434.
CHY 445 Chemistry: Materials Chemistry Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 1 hr. This course focuses on the relationship between the synthesis, properties and function of specialty materials with extended structures. Topics will include important conducting materials such as charge-transfer salts, semiconductors, superconductors, and organic and inorganic polymers; optoelectric materials; zeolites and nonporous structures, supramolecular assemblies such as liquid crystals and piezoelectric thin films. This course provides an excellent opportunity for the interested student to explore topics that are being actively researched in both industrial and academic institutions. Prerequisites: CHY 242, CHY 381 and CHY 344.
CHY 449 Chemistry: Inorganic Chemistry II Lect: 3 hrs./Lab: 3 hrs. An introduction to the coordination chemistry of the transition metals. Topics include structure and bonding, electronic spectroscopy, reaction mechanisms, organometallic chemistry and bioinorganic chemistry. The laboratory will consist of the preparation and spectroscopic characterization of various transition metal complexes. Prerequisite: CHY 344.
CHY 482 Chemistry: Selected Topics in Biology and Chemistry Lect: 3 hrs. Recent developments and topics of current interest in biology and chemistry and their applications will be included. A variety of instructional modes will be used e.g. lecture, seminar, guest speakers, student presentations, demonstration and practice. Prerequisites: BLG 407 and CHY 362.
CHY 547 Chemistry: Theory of Food Analysis Lect: 3 hrs. The application of sampling techniques, physical measurement, analytical chemistry, instrumental analysis and statistical methods to the quality control for food products. Certain aspects of food processing techniques will be discussed to provide a better understanding of the quality control procedures. Precursor: CHY 204.
