ACADEMIC STANDING VARIATIONS
In addition to Ryerson’s criteria on Academic Standing, the following program variations apply:
Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science
Conditional—A cumulative grade point average of 1.85 to 1.99 but with no failed grades; OR one or more INC grades but with no failed grades; OR only one failed grade but with a grade point average of at least 2.00.
Students with CONDITIONAL standing may continue their program studies as if they had CLEAR standing, but are required to consult with their program, School or Department prior to registering in the CONDITIONAL term regarding procedures for clearing the status. Students are cautioned that their grades in subsequent courses will have to result in an overall cumulative performance with CLEAR standing or their standing will become PROBATIONARY as defined below.
PROBATIONARY—A cumulative grade point average of 1.00 to 1.84; OR one failed grade but with a grade point average of 1.85 to 1.99; OR two failed grades; OR a second successive academic term resulting in a CONDITIONAL standing.
Students with PROBATIONARY standing may not continue their program studies until a specific plan for studies has been authorized by their program School or Department and recorded with the Office of the Registrar. Such a plan will set out a group of specific courses (including all requirements for failed courses) that if successfully completed with suitable grades could result in a CLEAR standing within not more than two academic terms of study. Students who fail to have a probationary plan of studies (i.e., Probationary contract) approved by their program department will have their course selection requests or course registrations cancelled for the semester in which they are on probation.
Students should note that under certain circumstances it may be impossible to achieve a CLEAR standing without repeating and upgrading, as part of the PROBATIONARY program of study, one or more courses in which grades in the D range have been earned.
Sudents with a PROBATIONARY standing will be eligible to continue their studies as long as they achieve a grade point average of 2.00 or higher with no failed grades (F or F-S) during each term of their PROBATIONARY program, even when their cumulative grade point average has not been raised to 2.00. Students who, while on PROBATION, raise their cumulative grade point average above 2.00, and have no failures during their PROBATIONARY studies will normally receive an Academic Standing of CLEAR.
Notwithstanding the above, students are required to meet the terms of the PROBATIONARY contract agreed to with their Program Department, unless changes are subsequently agreed to, in writing, with their Program Department. Failure to meet the terms of their PROBATIONARY contract may result in a student’s suspension from their Ryerson program. Specifically, failure to successfully complete (either through failure OR withdrawal without written permission of the Program Department) all courses stipulated in the student’s PROBATIONARY plan of studies may result in a student’s suspension from their program. Students are reminded that in order to graduate, a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 is required.
Disability Studies
A grade of C- or lower in
DST 501,
DST 502,
DST 725, and
DST 099 will result in a PROBATIONARY standing. A second consecutive C- in any of these courses will result in a WITHDRAWAL standing.
Early Childhood Education
A failed grade in a course other than a Field Practice course but with a grade point average of at least 2.00 will result in a CONDITIONAL standing.
A failed grade in any Field Practice course (ECE 014, ECE 034, ECE 206,
ECE 442; OR one failed grade in any other course but with a grade point average of 1.50 to 1.99 will result in a PROBATIONARY standing.
The School of Early Childhood Education reserves the right, at any point during the academic term, to remove a student from a placement site, in a situation in which clients or others are placed at risk. This will result in the student receiving an “F” grade.
In this circumstance, students shall have established rights of appeal; however, they cannot remain in the course while an appeal is underway. The appeal will be conducted promptly in order to protect student rights.
Midwifery
A cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.33 AND a minimum passing grade in each registered course will result in a CLEAR standing.
A cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of less than 2.33; OR one failed grade in any course will result in a PROBATIONARY standing. Students with a PROBA-TIONARY standing may not continue their program studies until a specific plan for studies has been authorized by their program and recorded with the Office of The Registrar. Such a plan will set out a group of specific courses (including all requirements for the failed course) that if successfully completed could result in a CLEAR standing within not more than than two academic terms of study. Students who fail to have a probationary plan of studies (i.e. probationary contract) approved by their program will have their course selection requests or course registrations cancelled for the semester in which they are on probation.
A student must obtain the minimum pass grade for the course being repeated and maintain a Term Grade Point Average (TGPA) of 2.33 for the duration of the PROBATIONARY period.
Students should note that under certain curcumstances it may be impossible to achieve a CLEAR standing without repeating and upgrading, as part of the PROBATIONARY program of study.
Students with PROBATIONARY standing will be eligible to continue their studies as long as they achieve a Term Grade Point Average (TGPA) of 2.33 or higher with no failed grades (F or F-S) during each term of their PROBATIONARY program, even when their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) has not been raised to 2.33 (67 percent). Students who, while on PROBATION, raise their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) above 2.33 and have no failures during their PROBATIONARY studies will normally receive an Academic Standing of CLEAR.
Notwithstanding the above, students are required to meet the terms of the PROBATIONARY contract agreed to with their Program Department, unless changes are subsequently agreed to, in writing, with their Program Department. Failure to meet the terms of their PROBATIONARY contract may result in the assignment of a WITHDRAWN standing from their program. Specifically, failure to successfully complete (either through failure OR withdrawal without written permission of the Program) all courses stipulated in the student’s PROBATIONARY plan of studies will result in a WITHDRAWN standing.
A failed grade in two non-clinical courses in an academic term; OR a failed grade in any two clinical courses; OR a second failed grade in the same course; OR a Term Grade Point Average (TGPA) less than 2.33 or a failed course at the end of a probationary period will result in a WITHDRAWN standing.
The Midwifery Education program reserves the right, at any point during the term, to remove a student from a clinical placement or laboratory setting if the student exhibits unsafe clinical practice or behaviour that places clients or others at risk and/or violates the Midwifery Act of Ontario. Such removal will result in the student receiving an “F” grade and may result in dismissal from the program.
In this circumstance, students shall have established rights of appeal; however, they cannot remain in the course while the appeal is underway. The appeal will be conducted promptly in order to protect student rights.
Nursing Collaborative Program Post-RN Program (PRNP)
Students must achieve a minimum grade of “C” in all professional nursing courses (includes all NUC, NSE, NUR, PAT courses) other than those nursing courses graded as Pass-Fail in order to be eligible to enroll in professional nursing courses in the subsequent semester. Students who earn a grade lower than “C” in these courses will be given a Probationary standing, regardless of their overall GPA. A second consecutive grade less than “C” in a given professional nursing course will result in a Suspended status.
Nursing practice courses (except NSE 012) are graded on a Pass-Fail basis. The first Failed grade (F) in a nursing practice course will result in a Probationary standing (as defined in Ryerson University’s Academic Policies).
A second Failed grade (F) in a nursing practice course (either a repeated or subsequent practice course) will result in a Withdrawn standing.
At any point during the academic term/year, the School of Nursing reserves the right to terminate a student’s experience in a nursing practice setting, when patterns of behaviour place self, clients or others at risk. This will result in the student receiving a Failed grade (F) for the course. In this circumstance, students shall have established rights of appeal; however, they cannot remain in the course while the appeal is underway. The appeal will be conducted promptly in order to protect students rights.
The student may be Withdrawn from the nursing program for reasons of professional unsuitability.
An Incomplete grade assigned to a nursing practice course must be cleared prior to the official start date of the subsequent nursing practice course.
All nursing theory courses must be completed within five years of the prerequisite professional courses. (For example, no more than five years can elapse between completion of Year 1 professional courses and enrolment in Year 2 professional courses.)
All students enrolled in a post RN program course must have valid or pending registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). Students are required to notify the School of Nursing of any changes in registration status. Failure to attain/maintain CNO registration will result in WITHDRAWAL from the course(s) and the program.
Nursing (NUDP)
(Pre-Fall 2001 Approvals)
A failed grade (F grade) in any nursing practice course (NSE 012, NSE 022, NSE 032, NSE 417, NSE 418,
NCL 700,
NCL 800) will result in a PROBATIONARY standing.
A second failed grade in any nursing practice course (NSE 012, NSE 022, NSE 032, NSE 417, NSE 418,
NCL 700,
NCL 800) will result in a WITHDRAWAL standing.
Students who have received a PROBATIONARY standing as a result of their performance in courses other than clinical practice courses, may not continue into the subsequent clinical practice course in the following term if their term Grade Point Average (GPA) is 1.50 or lower.
The School of Nursing reserves the right, at any point during the academic term, to remove a student from a clinical placement or laboratory setting, in a situation in which clients or others are placed at risk. This will result in the student receiving an “F” grade.
In this circumstance, students shall have established rights of appeal; however, they cannot remain in the course while an appeal is underway. The appeal will be conducted promptly in order to protect student rights.
Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PNPP)
All students in the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner degree and certificate programs, must achieve a grade of B- or higher in each of its core courses (NUR 086, NUR 088,
NUR 808,
NUR 822,
NCL 090) in order to continue in the program. Students who pass these courses with a grade lower than B-, will be given a WITHDRAWN standing regardless of their overall grade point average. Students who fail to achieve a B- in two of these courses, or fail to achieve a B- in one course upon repeating it, will be given a WITHDRAWN standing.
For the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner courses in both the degree and certificate program, there may be additional grade/promotion policies. See the School of Nursing Student Handbook for details.
Social Work
A failure in
SWP 036 or
SWP 051 leads to a PROBATIONARY standing. A second consecutive failure in any of these courses leads to the student’s withdrawal from the program.
The Director of the School of Social Work may remove a student from field placement and/or suspend them from the program when there is reason to conclude that the student:
(a) has behaved/performed in a manner which endangers students, clients, agency staff, faculty, or staff; or
(b) has harassed/abused a student, client, agency staff, faculty, staff or others; or
(c) has been convicted of, or has been charged with, a criminal offence involving violent or abusive behaviour; or
(d) is in violation of Chapter 4 of the Canadian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics (1994).
