JUS 101 JUS 300 JUS 601

JUS 101 Justice: Understanding Crime in Canadian Society Lect: 3 hrs.

This course is designed to give students the background and knowledge to think critically about information on crime and the social response to it in Canada. Students will learn about how we come to know about crime and criminality, and will conclude with a detailed analysis of one or more specific crimes (eg. homicide, prostitution or illicit drug use) in order to apply the concepts and materials presented throughout the term. (LL)
Exclusion: JUS 300.

JUS 300 Justice: Canadian Justice: A Systems Approach Lect: 3 hrs.

The criminal justice system describes the institutional apparatus through which Canadian society controls criminal behaviour. This course investigates the extent to which the various agencies and professions involved in the system function as an integrated whole and to what degree they are best viewed as a network of interrelated components with goals and problems not shared by other participants in the criminal justice process.
Exclusion: JUS 101.

JUS 601 Justice: Violence, Victims and the Justice System Lect: 3 hrs.

This course has two emphases: theory and research on the nature of criminal victimization in Canada, and the role and experiences of victims of crime in the Canadian criminal justice system, including the various programs which have been developed to meet their unique needs. The extent to which the current criminal justice system does, or can, meet the broad range of victim needs is considered, as are alternative approaches.
