MUS 031 Music: Music in Film and Media Lect: 3 hrs.

This is a professionally-related course for image art students, with an emphasis on music in film. Topics include the functions and effects of music in film and media, music vocabulary, repertoire and styles. How is music used in selected films? What is the relationship between a musical score and the dramatic theme of a film? Does the music support or play against the visual images? Classic scores of the twentieth century will be studied. MUS 101 Music: Intro to World and Early European Music Lect: 3 hrs.

This course provides basic knowledge and understanding of music in culture, with emphasis on listening skills and repertoire. Brief survey of world music and the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods in European music. The functions of music in culture. Study of music vocabulary and early genres of music. First half of MUS 021. (LL)

MUS 201 Music: Introduction to Classical Music Lect: 3 hrs.

This course examines Western music from the Classical, Romantic and Modern periods (approx. 1750 to the present day). Survey of the development of major styles, genres and forms of European music, including symphony, concerto and sonata. Lives and works of the great composers including Mozart, Beethoven and Stravinsky. Second half of MUS 021. (LL)

MUS 300 Music: Musicology Lect: 3 hrs.

A course designed to develop a sensitivity to and better understanding of music production, and to increase awareness of style. Study of materials and structural and expressive principles of music, instrumental and vocal media performance styles and great performers. Study of main genres of Western music with special regard to music dramatic forms and to functions of music in the theatre, historical backgrounds, cultural patterns, comparison with contemporary trends in theatre.
Prerequisite: THP 303 or permission of Instructor.

MUS 501 Music: Traditional Musics of the World Lect: 3 hrs.

This course examines musical cultures around the world, focusing on traditional genres. Course content covers conceptual, structural, rhythmic and modal systems. The functions and meanings of music in diverse cultures will be examined. Representative genres will be studied, including the Indian raga, Turkish fasil (suite) and Japanese gagaku (court music).
