MPM 016 New Media: New Media Production Lect: 3 hrs.

This course introduces New Media students to the basics of new media practice and the fundamental principles of electronic and digital representation processes. Student projects will investigate the creative, expressive and aesthetic forms and content of new media and media systems, including the preproduction, production and postproduction phases of work. During the second term, the interdisciplinary nature of new media practices will be explored.
Corequisite: MPM 017.

MPM 017 New Media: Tools and Applications Lect: 3 hrs.

This lecture/laboratory course introduces students to the tools, applications and creative methods used in the making and interpreting of contemporary media works, as well as to photographic and film imaging, digital applications and sound recording. The emphasis is on cross-disciplinary instruction in an inter-media working environment. The tools and applications of new media will be the initial focus, followed by investigation of photographic and film imaging formation systems, to gain a broader understanding of image characteristics, recording and sequencing.
Corequisite: MPM 016.

MPM 021 New Media: New Media History Lect: 3 hrs.

This course seeks to locate contemporary New Media practices within a broader history of developments in technology and the traditional arts. It traces the evolution of digital media, from the initial experiments in hypertext, animation, and graphics to its current emergence as a new medium based on collaborative, distributed, and interactive modes of production. Alngise this, the evolution of video as a complimentary electronic medium is examined, from early work to present practices with special consideration being given to the Canadian context. The historical, theoretical and practical aspects of the transformation of the role of author and the viewer in New Media practices are also explored.
Prerequisite: MPF 023.

MPM 022 New Media: Production Lab: 9 hrs.

This second year production course will involve an investigation of evolving media and media systems. The interplay between creative expression and technological capability will be explored through film, photography, video, audio and computer-based media with emphasis on constructing and evaluating innovative form and content for media artifacts. The issues addressed in these productions will be studied in relation to the human interface and personalized media through participatory workshops and innovative pedagogical strategies.
Course Weight: 3.00.
Prerequisite: MPC 011.

MPM 026 New Media: Theories of Representation Lect: 3 hrs.

This course will comprise two components: a one-hour combined lecture in critical theory, focussing on selected 20th century thinkers who have made important contributions to modern through post-modern understandings of culture, plus a two-hour option-specific component designed to consider the implications. The New Media option version of this segment will focus on the concept of representation in visual and sound media. The relationship between visual and aural signs and the role of this “language” in contemporary cultural production will be explored in the context of ongoing social and technological change.
Prerequisite: MPC 014.

MPM 032 New Media: Production Lab: 9 hrs.

This course, explores the integration and synthesis of media in documentary, personal, dramatic, and/or community-based productions. Emphasis is placed on constructing and evaluating innovative form and content. The principles of sound, digital imagery and elastic media are related to the design of computer-mediated experiences. Theory and techniques of production - input, output, interpretation, design, structuration, display and transmission as they relate to the new media of communications and telecommunications - are studied in the context of experimental concepts and practical constraint.
Course Weight: 3.00.
Prerequisite: MPM 022.

MPM 042 New Media: Senior Project Lab: 6 hrs.

This course will continue, at an advanced level, the exploration of innovative interdisciplinary production and experimental uses working across individual media. Advanced production methods and techniques will be studied in the preparation of the student’s senior project.
Course Weight: 3.00.
