SPN 011 Spanish: Introductory Spanish Lab: 3 hrs. For students with little or no knowledge of Spanish. Course uses communicative approach emphasizing oral comprehension and expression without omitting written aspects of language. Students learn basics of Spanish grammar preparing them for further study. Historical, social and cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking world are introduced through the study of short readings. This course is equivalent to SPN 101 and SPN 201. (LL) Prerequisite: Placement Test or Permission of the Department.
SPN 021 Spanish: Intermediate Spanish Lab: 3 hrs. This course is designed for students with intermediate level Spanish skills and continues the same communicative approach as SPN 011. Students will learn more complex structures and vocabulary required for a good working knowledge of the language. Emphasis is placed on oral proficiency, but reading and writing skills are further developed. Appropriate cultural readings and exposure to the Spanish speaking world are integral parts of the course. This course is equivalent to SPN 301 and SPN 401. Not open to native speakers. SPN 031 Spanish: Advanced Spanish Lab: 3 hrs. A continuation of Intermediate Spanish (SPN 401) using a communicative approach. Listening comprehension, oral communication, correct-ness and spontaneity of expression, sensitivity to language registers as well as written aspects of the language are stressed. Newspaper clippings, magazine articles and video-taped material introduce students to various aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. A novel or play is studied each semester. Short essays and commentaries improve writing and analytical skills. This course is equivalent to SPN 501 and SPN 601. (LL) (UL) Prerequisites: SPN 401, Placement Test or permission of Department.
SPN 044 Spanish: Introduction to Latin American Culture I & II Lect: 3 hrs. This course is an introduction to Latin American culture. The first term will concentrate on South America; the second term, on Mexico, Central America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. The course will study literature, cinema, painting, music and popular culture within the socio-political context of Latin America. Prerequisites: SPN 601, Placement Test or permission of Department.

SPN 201 Spanish: Introductory Spanish II Lab: 3 hrs. Second half of SPN 011. (LL) Prerequisite: SPN 101, Placement Test or permission of Department.
SPN 301 Spanish: Intermediate Spanish I Lab: 3 hrs. First half of SPN 021. (LL) (UL) Prerequisites: SPN 201, Placement Test or permission of Department.
SPN 401 Spanish: Intermediate Spanish II Lab: 3 hrs. Second half of SPN 021. (LL) (UL) Prerequisites: SPN 301, Placement Test or permission of Department.
SPN 501 Spanish: Advanced Spanish I Lab: 3 hrs. First half of SPN 031. (LL) (UL) Prerequisites: SPN 401, Placement Test or permission of Department.
SPN 601 Spanish: Advanced Spanish II Lab: 3 hrs. Second half of SPN 031. (LL) (UL) Prerequisites: SPN 501, Placement Test or permission of Department.
SPN 704 Spanish: Introduction to Latin America Culture I Lect: 3 hrs. This course will present a panoramic view of the development of the Spanish language, (LL) (UL) Prerequisites: SPN 601, Placement Test or permission of Department.
SPN 710 Spanish: Spanish of Spain and Latin America Lab: 3 hrs. This course will present a panoramic view of the development of the Spanish language, while providing an in-depth study of its present-day grammatical structure. Students will be taken on a lively journey through the history of Spanish from its Latin origins to its current use in Spain, Latin America and elsewhere. The norms and variations of Modern Spanish will be studied. The course will be given in Spanish using multimedia. (LL) (UL) Prerequisites: SPN 601, or equivalent or permission of Department.
SPN 804 Spanish: Introduction to Latin American Culture II Lect: 3 hrs. This course is designed to introduce students to the culture of Mexico, Central America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Literary works by authors such as Laura Esqivel, Carlos Fuentes and Nicolás Guillén will be studied in relation to social and political themes in Latin American society. The study of painting, sculpture, cinema, music and popular culture will lead to an enhanced awareness of cultural diversity in the Spanish speaking world. Second half of SPN 044. (LL) (UL) Prerequisites: SPN 601, Placement Test or permission of Department.
SPN 810 Spanish: Cultural Context of Writing Lab: 3 hrs. Intended for students who need to improve their writing skills in Spanish, this course will study five major modes of writing: description, narration, exposition, argumentation and academic discourse. Students will engage in the in-depth analysis of texts from various sources: Spanish and Latin-American literature, journalistic writing, advertising, scholarly articles, etc. The course is structured in such a way as to help students understand the cultural complexity of the relationship between the writer and the intended reader.
