• a valid standard Red Cross or St. John’s First Aid Certificate

5- To be admitted to the program students must be capable of successful completion of field education requirements which demand full day commitments in child care centres and schools with young children.

6- Ryerson will allow the mixing of U, M and OAC courses as applicable but comparable courses will not be double-counted. As well, Ryerson will not accept the “out of school” component of Grade 12 U/M co-op courses for admission consideration.

7- Subject to competition, candidates may be required to present averages/grades above the minimum.

Applicants should have experience working with children in groups. Examples of appropriate experiences are: volunteer work in child care centres; leading Brownie Packs; camp counselling; parks and recreation summer camps and programs; sports coaching roles with children.

Students in the regular four year and direct entry programs will require a yearly, “clear” police reference check in order to fulfil the field education requirements within the curriculum. Students will be given appropriate instructions and forms during the term prior to placements in each year and will be required to cover the necessary cost of the check in the hometown of their primary residence.

International students will be required to keep a copy of the police reference check form. The police check should be completed within the past three months prior to their departure for Canada and must include a search and clearance for “work with vulnerable persons”.

Scholarships are awarded to second, third, and fourth-year students based on academic excellence and practical performance.

DIRECT ENTRY PROGRAM

The School of Early Childhood Education at Ryerson University offers a full- and a part-time program for graduates of the Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology (CAAT) Early Childhood Education programs. This program accepts qualified graduates with an ECE diploma into third year of the Bachelor of Arts program.

ADMISSION INFORMATION

CAAT graduates who wish to be considered for admission are required to meet the following admission guidelines:

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Grade 12 U/M or OAC courses (or equivalent)

OR

• Mature student guidelines of the University

PLUS

• Grade “B” (70 percent, 3.0 GPA) average in CAAT Early Childhood Education diploma studies or its equivalent, with proof of diploma completion

PLUS

• All Direct Entry students must have completed three one-term (or equivalent) liberal studies courses (e.g. English, History, Philosophy, etc., but NOT Introductory Psychology or Sociology) at the university level with minimum “C” grades prior to admission to the Early Childhood Education Program.

• Introductory Psychology and Sociology cannot be counted towards the liberal studies admission requirements. However, because of their relevance to the profession, students are advised to complete one or both prior to admission to the Early Childhood Education program.

Approved students must present, within two weeks of registration into the third year:

• a valid standard Red Cross or St. John’s First Aid Certificate

• medical documentation of a clear standard T.B. test

• police check documentation. (Please refer to the requirements as stated in the section following the “NOTES” Section of the four year ECE program.)

Students will also require a YEARLY “CLEAR” police reference check. Refer to Police Check Information following the “NOTES” section of the four year ECE program.

To be admitted to the program students must be capable of successful completion of field education requirements which demand full day commitments in child care centres and schools with young children.

Applicants are also required to produce a letter of recommendation from the coordinator or a faculty member of the CAAT ECE department and/or from the applicant’s current/former employer to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Applicants may be interviewed by members of the faculty of the School of Early Childhood Education.

Students admitted to the Direct Entry program through full-time studies or part-time studies must complete ECE 100, ECE 200 and POL 220 in addition to their program of study prior to graduating from the program. Students must also complete, as part of their program of study, three courses of upper-level liberal studies in order to graduate.

Note: Direct Entry program applicants who intend to ultimately apply to a Faculty of Education are advised that admission requirements to the Bachelor of Education programs vary from one Faculty of Education to another and from year to year. Students should contact individual Faculties of Education for specific details. Applicants with U-level mathematics and science courses may improve their chances of admission if applying to a faculty of education.

These students will take the first two years of study at George Brown College’s Department of Early Childhood Studies.
