ACADEMIC STANDINGS

Each student’s Academic Standing will be established from the student’s formal course grades at the end of each academic term (Spring/Summer term grades will be combined with Fall term grades) on the basis of the following categories and criteria for overall academic performance:

1. CLEAR-a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00, AND at least a minimum passing grade (or non-graded course credit) in each registered course.

Students with CLEAR standing may continue their program studies with no restrictions except for the obligation to satisfy prerequisite requirements.

2. CONDITIONAL-a cumulative grade point average of 1.50 to 1.99 but with no failed grades; OR one or more INC grades but with no failed grades; OR only one failed grade but with a grade point average of at least 2.00.

Students with CONDITIONAL standing may continue their program studies as if they had CLEAR standing, but are required to consult with their program School or Department prior to registering in the CONDITIONAL term. The School or Department will indicate to students the reasons for their standings and procedures for achieving a CLEAR standing. Students are cautioned that their grades in subsequent courses will have to result in an overall cumulative performance with CLEAR standing or their standing will become PROBATIONARY as defined below.

3. PROBATIONARY-a cumulative grade point average of 1.00 to 1.49; OR only one failed grade but with a grade point average of 1.50 to 1.99; OR two failed grades; OR a second successive academic term resulting in a CONDITIONAL standing. Students with PROBATIONARY standing may not continue their program studies until a specific plan for studies has been authorized by their program School or Department signed by the student and recorded with the Office of The Registrar. Such a plan will set out a group of specific courses (including all requirements for failed courses) that if successfully completed with suitable grades could result in a CLEAR standing within not more than two academic terms of study. Students who fail to have a probationary plan of studies (also known as a Probationary contract) approved by their School or Department will have their course selection requests or course registrations cancelled for the term in question.

Students should note that under certain circumstances it may be impossible to achieve a CLEAR standing without repeating and upgrading, as part of the PROBATIONARY program of study, one or more courses in which grades in the D range have been earned.

Students with a PROBATIONARY standing will be eligible to continue their studies as long as they achieve a grade point average of 2.00 or higher with no failed grades (F or F-S) during each term of their PROBATIONARY program, even when their cumulative grade point average has not been raised to 2.00. Students on PROBATION who raise their cumulative grade point average to 2.00 or higher, and have no failures during their PROBATIONARY studies will normally receive a CLEAR standing.

Failure to meet the terms of their PROBATIONARY contract will result in the student’s suspension from their Ryerson program.

4. SUSPENDED-a cumulative grade point average of less than 1.00; OR three or more failed grades, OR failing to achieve the study plan established following a PROBATIONARY standing; OR failing to complete the program within its maximum time limit.

Students with SUSPENDED standing may not continue their program studies. Students who have been SUSPENDED from Ryerson program may apply in writing for reinstatement back into their original program only after a minimum period of suspension has been served. This minimum period of suspension may be one semester or a full academic year depending on the program.

At the time of SUSPENSION, students who are interested in the possibility of reinstatement will be provided, upon request, with an opportunity to meet with a designated program representative to discuss their situation. Depending on the circumstances, the student may be advised that there is minimal chance for future reinstatement. In other situations, the student will be advised that reinstatement is a possibility, particularly if the student is able to meet the program’s minimum conditions for the reinstatement of suspended students. The nature of such conditions may be academic, non-academic, or a combination of the two, at the discretion of the program School or Department. If requested, the program representative may outline these conditions in writing.

Meeting the minimum conditions for reinstatement does not guarantee reinstatement to the program. Space limitations and Ryerson, commitments to new and continuing students (who are in good Academic Standing) may mean that SUSPENDED students have only modest chances for reinstatement to their original program, regardless of what they achieve after SUSPENSION.

Normally, the program representative may suggest that the student complete (at Ryerson or elsewhere) up to two one-term courses in order to provide evidence of improved prospects for academic success. These may be two specific one-term courses or two one-term courses from a list suggested by the program representative. In such situations, the suspended student may choose to enroll in the designated courses at Ryerson either as a SPECIAL STUDENT or in appropriate Ryerson Continuing Education courses. Advice will also be given on an expected level of performance in these courses. Unsatisfactory performance will normally mean no opportunity for reinstatement.

Normally the designated courses will be taken after a minimum period of SUSPENSION has been served. However, students who have the advance permission of their program representative to complete these courses during their period of SUSPENSION and who are subsequently reinstated to their program, may have up to two one-term courses or the equivalent credited towards their program graduation requirements. The grades in these courses will not be included in program GPA calculations.

Normally, SUSPENDED students will not be considered for transfer to any other Ryerson program until their minimum period of SUSPENSION has been served. Exceptions to this provision are at the discretion of the School or Department to which the student is applying for transfer. In such cases, the rationale for an immediate transfer will be provided in writing to the Dean of the receiving program and the Registrar.

Students who have been placed on Disciplinary Suspension for Student Code of Conduct violations will not be permitted to register in any course at the University during their period of Disciplinary Suspension.

5. WITHDRAWN-any academic performance that would result in SUSPENDED standing for a second time.

Students whose academic standing is WITHDRAWN may not continue in the program and cannot expect any reinstatement.

6. OPEN-no new Academic Standing has been calculated; the current academic standing remains. (Note: Academic Standings are not calculated until a minimum of three courses have been completed and graded).
