BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

Administered by the School of Nursing

DEGREE: Four years of study following Grade 12 U/M or OAC graduation. This program is offered on a full-time basis only.

ADMISSION: O.S.S.D. with six Grade 12 U/M or OAC courses including the following:

NEW CURRICULUM: Grade 12 U courses in: English, Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U), and Grade 11 U or M or Grade 12 U Mathematics (one of MCF3M, MCR3U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MDM4U) with a minimum grade of 60 percent or higher in each of these courses.

OLD CURRICULUM: OAC courses in: English, Biology and Chemistry or equivalent, and a senior level advanced Mathematics at Grade 11 or higher (or equivalent) with a minimum of 60 percent or higher in each of these courses.

NOTES:

1- ENG4U/EAE4U or English/Anglais OAC 1 is the preferred English.

2- Applicants applying as “Mature Students” must have Grade 12 U or OAC courses (or equivalent) in English, Biology and Chemistry, and Grade 11 U or M (new curriculum) or Grade 11 Advanced (old curriculum) or higher Mathematics. Marks obtained for each of the above subjects must be 60 percent or higher.

3- Students are required to obtain a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Basic Cardiac Life Support Certificate prior to registration and are responsible for maintaining this certification throughout the program.

4- Applicants who possess only the required OSSD Diploma and who are not “Mature Students” and have Grade 12 U or OAC courses in English, Chemistry and Biology as well as Grade 11 U or M (new curriculum) or Grade 11 Advanced (old curriculum) or higher Mathematics-all with a minimum 60 percent will be considered if they have:

i) Additional Grade 12 U, M or OAC courses and/or
ii) Successful completion of a year-long college course or
two one-semester college courses and/or
iii) successful completion of a year-long university course
or two one-semester university courses.

5- Applicants who possess the noted OSSD Diploma and the Grade 12 U or M, OAC and Grade 11 courses as noted above, excluding the additional noted OAC course(s) or the college/university course(s) and who are not “Mature Students” but can demonstrate their ability to succeed in the program will be considered using a combination of the following evaluation methods:

i) interview;
ii) resume;
iii) portfolio of work experience;
iv) challenge examination;
v) high school transcript reflecting a consistent standard of
achievement (“B” grades or higher).

6- Pre-admission testing may be required in one or more of the above areas.

7- Ryerson will allow the mixing of U, M and OAC courses as applicable but comparable courses will not be double-counted. As well, Ryerson will not accept the “out of school” component of Grade 12 U/M co-op courses for admission consideration.

8- Subject to competition, candidates may be required to present averages/grades above the minimum.

Additional Nursing Program Requirements

Upon admission, students will require a YEARLY “CLEAR” police check in order to be registered in the practice courses of the curriculum. The student is responsible to obtain and complete a police check application form and cover the necessary cost for the police check done by the police agency in the region of their primary residence (hometown)*.

Upon receipt of this application, the applicant is required to inform their local police agency that this police check is required for work with vulnerable persons and that the police check is required for student placement.

International students who are applying will need to retain a copy of the police clearance that is done at the time of their application for a study permit.

*Students who live in the City of Toronto and the Region of York may obtain an application form from the placement office, Ryerson School of Nursing. Students who live in other municipalities or provinces may obtain the application from their local police agency. Students also require:

- A CPR Certificate (Basic Rescuer-Level C) within the last two years that must remain current throughout the program.

- Proof of required immunization, completion of health review by a Nurse Practitioner or physician and submission of medical forms, as required by the Ontario Public Hospital Act, Ministry guidelines and Placement Agency policies.

Students must submit information pertaining to their state of health and immunization prior to registering. Instructions will be provided upon acceptance.

Before undertaking this program, students should be aware that, under the provisions of the Regulated Health Profession and Nursing Acts, to qualify to write the College of Nurses registration exams they must:
