DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

The Department of History offers courses in modern and contemporary history in all programs at the University as well as through the Continuing Education Division. Some courses are general surveys and others are highly specialized, all draw on social, economic, intellectual and political history to explore significant aspects of our past. The courses are designed to acquaint students with historical methodology including the framing of questions about the past and the use of evidence in support of an argument. In addition to history through film and the history of science and technology, national and regional histories of Canada, Europe and the United States are offered at the lower-level as well as History of Science and Technology. A wide range of more specialized upper-level courses are also offered. These include the History of Modern Propaganda, Themes in African History, The Third Reich, Authority and Conflict in England 1558-1689 and, Unknown Canada: Rebels, Rioters, Strikers, as well as Twentieth Century American History. The Department also offers courses to enhance the professional training of students in such areas as child-care, business and journalism.
