DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

The Department of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science offers courses in each of its disciplines to all programs in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and certain courses, to programs in other Faculties.

All courses are designed after consultation with the respective academic departments in order to offer up-to-date, relevant material. Courses in mathematics include calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, probability and statistics and numerical analysis. Each is application-oriented, and requires the student to utilize the concepts and related mathematical skill in the solution of problems. Studies in mechanics, electromagnetism and modern physics are covered in the physics courses. These provide important background for the student, and are usually supported by laboratories, where students have an opportunity to perform experiments to reinforce and expand on the classroom presentation. Computer science courses emphasize the effective use of the computer in solving problems in the student’s discipline. Through such courses as these, the Department attempts to expose students to new and useful concepts to relate to their area of interest, and to develop their ability to solve problems.

The Department also administers the School of Computer Science which is primarily responsible for the program in Computer Science. Additional responsibilities include certificate programs offered through Continuing Education.
