HOME ADMISSION PROCEDURES AND POLICIES TRANSFER CREDITS

TRANSFER CREDITS

Application forms for transfer credits are available from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the Information Centre counter and at www.ryerson.ca/forms

Applicants should collect as soon as possible officially certified post-secondary academic transcripts, course descriptions/teaching outlines. These should be submitted directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the time of Admission application.

Transfer credits will be processed after a student has been formally admitted into an Undergraduate degree program. Students no longer need to apply for transfer credits for internal Ryerson courses.

Only previously taken post-secondary level courses that were not assessed for transfer credit upon admission nor used as part of the Basis of Admission can be assessed for transfer credit.

Course(s)/program(s) of study used as a basis of admission and/or transfer credit(s) may not be used for further transfer credit. Course(s) used to grant a transfer credit cannot be used for further credit.

The application must include officially certified academic transcripts, course descriptions/teaching outlines. In cases where a complete course outline in not available, a photocopy of the applicable course description from the appropriate calendar may be acceptable to assess transfer credit(s).

Applicants applying for credit for courses taught by the School of Business Management courses, must provide teaching outlines which include textbooks used, topics covered, amount of time spent on each and method of evaluation.

Applicants applying for credit for courses taught by the Faculty of Arts must provide teaching outlines that include a method of evaluation.

Course descriptions/teaching outlines, etc. are not kept once a Transfer Credit/Basis of Admission decision is made. Students are encouraged to keep a copy of all course descriptions/teaching outlines, etc. for their records.

Course descriptions/teaching outlines submitted at the time of Admission application and not used with a Transfer Credit application, will be destroyed after May 30 of the following year.

Courses from accredited universities are considered for transfer credit when successfully completed with a grade of 'C' or better, where 'C' equals 60 percent or higher.

Courses from accredited Community Colleges/Institutes of Technology may be considered for transfer credit when completed with a grade of 'B' or better, where 'B' equals 70 percent or higher.

Transfer credits, are not granted on the basis of a Statutory Declaration or Affidavit submitted in lieu of officially certified academic transcripts. Performance designations other than letter or percentage (numeric) grades, are not acceptable for transfer credit, (i.e. exam, CRT, etc.). The time lapsed since the course(s) was taken, may be a factor in determining the transferability of the course(s) (for many courses there is a ten-year limit).

If the applicant changes their program of study, only the Basis of Admission transfer credit(s) must be re-evaluated. This does not apply from part-time to full-time or vice versa of the same program curriculum.

If the Offer of Admission is cancelled or revoked, all transfer credit(s) will be automatically voided.

Transfer credits are granted on an external course to an equivalent Ryerson course basis.  The transfer credit equivalency granted may or may not be applicable to a student's curriculum.  If the transfer credit is not applicable, a student may wish to petition their program department for a Course Directive to allow the credit to be used towards their curriculum requirements.

NOTE: Not all transfer credits granted may be eligible for use towards a student's curriculum (graduation) requirements.

Students who are granted admission to a Direct Entry program are not required to complete course(s) in the previous semester(s)/year(s), toward their core program/major/option unless specifically told to do so in their Offer of Admission. For example, students granted admission to the third year of the Business Management program are not required to complete courses from semesters one through four towards their core program/major/option unless specifically told to do so in their Offer of Admission.

Transfer Credit is recorded on the Ryerson academic record as CRT. If granted transfer credit, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the course(s) is dropped from their current/future course intention - so that course load and payment of fees accurately calculated.

The original grade obtained in a course which was taken at another accredited post-secondary institution, prior to formal admission into a Ryerson program, and which is subsequently used for transfer credit, will not be recorded as a graded course nor will it be used in the calculation of a student’s Grade Point Average. Transfer credit is recorded on the Ryerson academic record as CRT. Please refer to the section on GRADE POINT AVERAGES in this calendar.

It is the student’s responsibility to check their academic record and transfer credits each year with the current Ryerson Undergraduate Calendar to ensure that their curriculum requirements are fulfilled.

Students who receive transfer credit(s)/advanced standing must complete studies that normally include at least one half of the program’s curriculum. No more than a total of 50 per cent of the program’s curriculum requirements may consist of credits/advanced standing (transfer credits, challenge credits, credits granted on a Letter of Permission).

Students are also responsible to notify their program/departments/ schools of credits granted, and to apply to change their status/fees payable (if applicable) and adjust their future course intentions within the specified deadlines. See the Significant Dates section of this calendar. Ryerson reserves the right to assess transfer credit on an individual basis and to make such changes in rules, regulations, and policies as may be required.

Policies contained in this official calendar supercede any information received to the contrary. Information received from service or program departments or faculties must be approved in advance, in writing, from the Registrar’s Office.
