Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences and transcends most branches of science. Knowledge of physics principles leads to an understanding of the physical world and can provide the insight needed to develop new ideas and innovative technologies. As part of Contemporary Science and Engineering programs at Ryerson, The Department of Physics offers a series of courses in introductory physics covering topics including mechanics, electromagnetism and modern physics. These courses are supported by laboratories and tutorials, where students have an opportunity to perform experiments to reinforce and expand on the classroom presentation, and to develop their problem solving skills. The Department participates in the Contemporary Science program, and offers options in Biophysics (BSc Biology) and Applied Physics (BSc Chemistry) where students can progress to advanced courses in Biophysics, Radiation Biology, Nuclear Physics with Radiation Interactions, Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics.
The Bachelor of Science program in Medical Physics is a multidisciplinary program appealing to students interested in a variety of science disciplines including physics, computer science, mathematics and biology. Medical physics is a branch of physics that deals with the physics principles used in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human disorders and diseases. These principles are central to the practice of diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy. Although multidisciplinary in nature, the Medical Physics curriculum provides students with a strong skills set in physics and the associated mathematics, both of which are included in a traditional physics degree. To these, core strengths are added discipline-specific courses in medical imaging, radiation physics and biophysics, and courses in other disciplines including biology, chemistry, and computer science. The Department’s strong research focus in medical biophysics and faculty ties with the medical and biotechnology community in what the City of Toronto has designated as the "Discovery District," prepares students for innovations in today's medical field.
