MPC 10A/B Concepts and Theories-A/B
This lecture course introduces the concepts and theories which animate visual work in all media and forms, and provides a foundation for students embarking upon their studies in the Film, Photography and New Media options. It offers theoretical, historical and cross-disciplinary perspectives, and is designed to establish a framework of knowledge that will enhance understanding of the cultural and technical power and limitations of each of these media.

MPC 13A/B Art History-A/B
A study of the history of art, from ancient times until modernism. The course provides an historical overview of the development of representational and non-representational painting, sculpture and architecture from the seventh century B.C. until the middle of the 20th century. Specific works of art will be viewed against the background of the ideas and issues which animated their times and will be analyzed stylistically and theoretically in order to provide the student with a context in which to critically approach the contemporary practices of art.

MPC 15A/B Design Composition-A/B
This course will deal with the fundamentals of expression and interpretation in the visual arts. Students will do applied exercises related to the elements and principles of design. Completed projects will be critiqued with reference to traditional and contemporary design issues. The course's main setting is the studio, where a variety of materials are used.

MPC 25A/B Visual Studies-A/B
This hands-on workshop will provide the vehicle for further, more advanced exploration of design issues and concepts as they apply to more sophisticated materials and media. Students will extend their design investigations into space, sound, light, colour and form components of their digital, film, photography and video productions. Assignments will provide opportunities for exploring processes such as animation and the design aspects of graphic layout and sequencing.
Lab: 3 hrs.
Prerequisite: MPC 15A/B or MPC 15
