Midwifery
MWF 11A/B Social and Cultural Dimensions of Health Care-A/B
This overview course will draw on current areas from sociology, anthropology and psychology to increase the students' understanding of individuals, social and cultural groups and society in general in relation to health and health care. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding the social and cultural meanings of pregnancy and birth to women and their families. Of particular importance, are the values and preferences of Native peoples and the many cultural communities within Ontario. (formerly MWF 105 and MWF 106)

MWF 109 Critical Appraisal of Research Literature
Introduction to the principles of clinical research and statistical inference with particular emphasis on critical assessment of evidence as presented in the health science literature. A problem-based approach will be taken.

MWF 111 Midwifery Care I - Intensive
This clinical course involves four weeks of structured learning experiences to prepare for MWF 120 the first clinical placement in a midwifery practice. Certification in CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation is done at this time. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

Corequisite: MWF 120, Prerequisites: (MWF 11 or MWF 11A/B), (MWF 12 or MWF 12A/B), with a minimum Grade of B-, MWF 109, MWF 113, MWF 114, and MWF 201 with a minimum Grade of C-.

MWF 113 Life Sciences for Midwifery
This course is divided into two sections: the Nature of Matter, and the Nature of Life. This course provides an overview of basic concepts relating to chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology. Content areas will include practical applications of clinical chemistry, specimen collection, related disease entities and pathologies, and laboratory values. A variety of evaluation methods will be used.

MWF 114 Pharmacotherapy
This course introduces concepts of pharmacotherapeutics. This course provides an overview of basic concepts in pharmacology, pharmacy and therapeutics relevant to the practice of midwifery in Ontario. Unifying concepts include pharmacokinetics, toxicology, adverse reactions in pregnancy and lactation and the neonate. A variety of evaluation methods will be used.

MWF 120 Midwifery Care I - Placement/Tutorials
This clinical placement course focuses on prenatal and postnatal assessment skills, providing labour support and monitoring maternal and fetal well-being during labour. Also included, is an introduction to hands-on skills for the birth and the role of the second midwife. There are weekly situation-based, small group tutorials. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 150 Midwifery: With Woman
This course provides an introduction to the profession of midwifery and women's experience of pregnancy, birth and early parenting. Through this course the student will develop an understanding of the model of midwifery in Ontario and internationally, develop interpersonal and communication skills as well as labour support techniques. Students will have opportunities to learn from women in a role of support and observation.

MWF 201 Reproductive Physiology
This course provides an in-depth understanding of human reproduction with particular emphasis on intrinsic control mechanisms and extrinsic methods of regulation of reproduction. This course will also provide the basis for understanding alterations from normal mechanisms including the influence of medical conditions on reproductive processes.

MWF 204 Health, Science and Society
This course is concerned with the biological, environmental, behavioural, social and economic factors that determine health needs of the population. There are three major components of the course: measuring health status, the determinants of health, and the provision of health care services. This is a reading, self-study course.

MWF 210 Independent Studies
This course allows students to engage in specialized scholarly and project work within the field of women's and infant health, where the content of the proposed studies is unavailable in the curriculum. The proposed area of study should be related to the research and practice interests, and availability of a midwifery faculty member. A plan of study must be submitted by the student and approved by the faculty member prior to course registration.

MWF 215 Special Topics
This course provides students with the opportunity to pursue advanced seminar studies on issues and themes of immediate and current significance in the field of midwifery, where the content of proposed seminar is unavailable in the curriculum. Seminars will be offered where there is demonstrated interest and available faculty expertise in the subject.

MWF 220 Midwifery Care II
This clinical course provides the student with an extended period of clinical experience, primarily within a midwifery practice under the supervision of a midwife preceptor. The course begins with all students in one location for one week, and then moves to individualized topics. The placement focuses on clinical skills in prenatal, labour and birth, postpartum and newborn care. Students begin to undertake the role of primary caregiver for childbearing women and their newborn infants. A weekly tutorial based on case situations and self-study materials will cover topics in preconception, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn care. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 250 Clinical Skills
This course is an introduction to the clinical skills and competencies necessary for the practice of normal midwifery care as preparation for the first midwifery clinical placement in the following term. Students will be introduced to a variety of skills utilized in prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care, including well woman and newborn physical assessment, monitoring fetal and maternal well being in labour, conducting births, collection of laboratory specimens, and universal precautions.

MWF 304 Principles and Methods of Research
Advanced critical analysis of midwifery and related literature. Principles of research methodology and statistics are used to systematically examine the literature in relation to selected topics. Students participate in an ongoing research study. This is a reading, self-study course.

MWF 306 Health Education and Health Promotion
This course will incorporate concepts and principles from areas that contribute to the understanding of human behaviour in health related situations. Of special interest, are teaching-learning situations that arise in primary health care settings for childbearing families. Practical components such as preparing written materials for clients, and participating in structured and informal teaching opportunities in settings may be included. This course will be a reading self-study course.

MWF 312 Professional Issues
Students will be brought together for a two week block for this course. Seminars and presentations will be used to cover topics related to the profession of midwifery, e.g. history of midwifery in Canada and other countries of the world, regulation of midwifery in Ontario, roles of professional and regulatory organizations, inter-professional issues such as scopes of practice, organizing and operating midwifery practices, issues in peer review and quality assurance.

MWF 315 Midwifery Synthesis Paper
Each student will submit an academic paper concerning either a clinical or a social aspect of midwifery. Students will be invited to present their papers to their peers.

MWF 320 Midwifery Care III
This course begins with a one-week intensive followed by a clinical placement under the supervision of a midwife preceptor. The students further develop their knowledge and skills relating to preconception, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn care. Both the intensive and tutorials focus on common complications, situations which involve consultation with other care providers and on the development of decision making skills and clinical judgment. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 350 Community Placement
Three experiences of one month each are planned. A placement of one month each will be organized with an obstetrician and a labour and delivery nurse. The purpose is to obtain familiarity with maternity care in the hospital setting, and observe referral obstetric care provided by an obstetrician. These placements provide the opportunity to foster collegial relationships and participate as a care provider in a variety of maternity care settings. The third placement is an elective and will be organized by the student and may take place within or outside the province. International experiences will be encouraged whenever possible. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 370 Elective Placement
This four-twelve week clinical placement course provides students with the opportunity to participate in an elective placement in a midwifery practice. Midwifery Program students will have the opportunity to address additional learning needs as identified in a learning contract developed with the faculty. It is also available to Special Students by permission of the program. Students enrolled in this course will provide care to women in home and hospital settings under the supervision of a midwife clinical preceptor and a member of the midwifery faculty. This course is offered based on availability of preceptors and faculty. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 410 Midwifery Care Clerkship
This course begins with a three-five day intensive. In this final term of clinical practice the emphasis will be on clinical skills and decision making. The student will be expected to act as a primary caregiver and provide midwifery care in all phases of childbirth care in all settings. Students will plan care and make clinical decisions with minimal supervision. Students participate in seminars which focus on case review and reflective practice. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 420 Midwifery Care IV
By completion of this course the student will have integrated theoretical and clinical content and have acquired a sound knowledge base and the clinical skills to provide primary midwifery care throughout the childbearing cycle. Students will continue to develop decision-making skills, emergency management and clinical judgement. Tutorial situations focus on situations which involve transfer of care and relationships with other health care providers. The course is graded on a pass/fail basis.
