Employer Guidelines OutlineEmployer Services at the Ryerson University Career Development and Employment Centre strives to bring together Ryerson students and graduates with employers from a broad range of industries and sectors. The intent of the following guidelines is to provide a framework for professional, ethical, responsive and mutually beneficial recruiting on campus.
General Guidelines
- Employers must adhere to all federal and provincial legislation pertaining to recruitment and other activities that may affect students, graduates and alumni of Ryerson University.
- The Ryerson Career Development and Employment Centre reserves the right to ban or suspend an employer from participating in any of its events and/or services based on student complaints, behaviour or actions by the employer contrary to the employer guidelines, overdue accounts and for any reason deemed necessary by Ryerson Career Development and Employment Centre staff. It is not the role of the Ryerson Career Development and Employment Centre to monitor the recruiting practices of employers, however, if there is a student complaint regarding an organization’s recruiting practices, the Career Development and Employment Centre will investigate.
- The Career Development and Employment Centre only permits one office, or unit of an employer to participate in any one Career event. Determination of who will be permitted to attend an event will be done on a first come, first serve basis.
Specific Employer Services
Career Fair Participation
- Booth location at a Career Fair must not impede or interfere with the booth space of other exhibitors at the fair. This includes any promotional activity such as handing out materials, the playing of music, and the set up of displays.
- Employers are expected to arrive before the scheduled start time of the fair and to remain at the fair until the scheduled end time.
- Employers are requested to have no more than 4 representatives at their booth during the fair at any one time. Lunch will be provided for up to 3 representatives for an employer at a fair. An additional charge of $10 per person will apply to employers that want to provide lunch for additional representatives.
Information Sessions and Information Tables
- Employers are required to post a job through the CDEC (CareerVault as well as WhoPlusYou) in order to host an Information Session.
- Employers are expected to arrive before the scheduled start of their session.
- Employers are responsible for ordering their own catering.
- Employers must order catering through Ryerson Food Services as per University regulations, unless they are holding an event in Oakham House, or the Student Campus Centre, in which case catering must be ordered from Oakham House.
- Requests for the use of audio visual equipment must be made at least 3 business days ahead of time and not on the day of the event.
- Employers must be prepared to exit the room in which their event is scheduled, by the agreed upon ending time of the event.
Interviews on Campus through the Career Development and Employment Centre
- Requests for rooms for on campus interviews will be granted on a first come, first serve basis.
- Employers must request room(s) for interviews at least 1 week in advance of the date of interview(s).
- If employers have requested the Career Development and Employment Centre to schedule interviews of students, then a list of candidates (Ryerson students and/or graduates) must be provided at least 3 days before the date of the interviews, including each candidate’s phone number and e-mail address, the requested length of each interview, when the interviews should start and until what time they should go until, and also any break times that should be set aside for the interviewers.
Posting Jobs through the Career Development and Employment Centre
- The Career Development and Employment Centre reserves the right to decline posting positions of external employers to the University
- All job postings must meet all federal and provincial legislation.
- The Career Development and Employment Centre will not approve job postings for positions that require applicants to pay a fee to secure the position.
- The Ryerson University Career Development & Employment Centre (CDEC) does not accept unpaid internships. For information on the legalities of unpaid internships in Ontario, please go to www.labour.gov.on.ca and search “unpaid internships”.
Third Party Recruiters
- Third Party recruiters, as defined by CACEE, are considered to be agencies, organizations or individuals recruiting students for employment opportunities with other organizations.
- Third Party recruiters are required to reveal the name of the employers they represent to Career Development and Employment Centre staff when requested.
- In cases where a duplicate position is posted by an employer and a third party recruiter, the posting of the employer will be posted.
Student Responsibility
The Career Development and Employment Centre encourages students to engage in critical analysis with respect to career planning and employment. We strongly recommend students, new graduates, and alumni adequately research and gather information on potential employers, so that they can make informed decisions on their career and job choices.
