Career Curriculum in the Classroom

Helping You Provide Career Focused Education to Ryerson Students

The Conference Board of Canada's Employability Skills report identifies a number of competencies that individuals need to enter, stay in, and progress in the world of work. The following in-class options complement the skills and knowledge students are acquiring through their academic curricula. These sessions, presented by counsellors in the Career Development and Employment Centre, have been designed to help students build "soft" skills and gain awareness that will contribute to their career and employment success.


Discovering Your Career Passion

Are you curious about what makes you unique? Gaining a better understanding of your values, interests, personality and skills is crucial to identifying a career path that’s right for you. A facilitated card sort activity will allow you to begin the important process of self assessment, in a structured and supportive environment.

Exploring Careers Outside of Academia

A Big Myth, “PhDs are for Academia Only.” The reality, “Good Professional level jobs are found in Industry too.” Join us to find alternative careers to academia. This workshop is designed to introduce a broad range of careers to Graduate students.

Pinpointing Resources for Career Planning

Get one step closer to making an informed career decision that is right for you. Set in a computer lab, this interactive workshop will highlight online and hard copy resources to help you find career options, Canadian labour market information, education/training, and conduct company research.

The "Wow" Factor: Resumes and Cover Letters that Stand Out

Grab an employer’s attention with a fantastic resume and cover letter that clearly outlines your experience and qualifications. Get the answers for your questions about what you can put in your resume and cover letter, how to tailor your documents and how to craft accomplishment statements to successfully market your skills.

Interview Techniques that Land the Job

Secure your dream job by taking proactive measures before, during and after an interview. This workshop will review useful strategies to help you feel better prepared for your next interview. You will also have the opportunity to practice answering popular behavioural questions.

Grad School Application Essentials

Prepare a comprehensive grad school application and impress the admissions committee with your skills and experience. Learn the difference between a CV and resume, and discover the components of a compelling personal statement/letter of intent. Obtaining reference letters that demonstrate your fit for a program will also be discussed.

Keep It Pro: Business Etiquette and Dress

Dazzle employers, colleagues, and clients with your savvy sense of professionalism and style. This workshop reveals the basic do’s and don’ts of common business practices, and will keep you in the loop about what to wear for an upcoming interview or in the workplace. You will have the chance to practice several workplace norms and give/receive feedback.

Don't Slurp the Soup! Tips for Dining Etiquette Success

Look and act like a seasoned dining connoisseur at your next business meeting or event involving food. Learn clever strategies to help you remember formal and informal place settings, and discover the difference between Continental and American dining styles. Essential table manners will be reviewed for breakfast, lunch and dinner scenarios.

Showcasing Achievements: Crafting an Engaging Portfolio

Job search portfolios can easily be used by students in any field. Convince employers of your job-readiness, by showing them an exciting collection of your work and accomplishments. Get a step-by-step overview of what you can include in your portfolio, how to organize content, and ways to use the portfolio in an interview. E-portfolios and portfolios for creative/design industries will also be briefly discussed.

Job Search Strategies that Maximize Results

Gain access to more employment opportunities by navigating the “hidden job market” and taking a proactive approach. Learn how to prepare a strong elevator pitch, conduct information interviews, and get past the front desk when placing cold calls. Networking strategies will be highlighted, along with tips for staying organized throughout your job search.

Network and communicate your way to your next job. Learn how to contact an employer and ask for a job, or for career or employment information, advice or guidance. This workshop will also show you how to present yourself and showcase your unique personal brand. Both online and offline tools will be discussed.

LinkedIn: Developing Career Connections & Effective Profiles

Establish a professional online presence by creating a sharp LinkedIn profile and building key industry contacts. Get tips on how to set up an engaging profile as a job seeker, and learn strategies to effectively network with professionals on LinkedIn. To encourage experiential learning, this workshop is held in a computer lab.

Make it a Breeze: Transitioning from School to Work

Change is inevitable. So what can you do to make the leap from school to work more manageable? This workshop will walk you through the process of evaluating, negotiating, and accepting job offers; starting your career and dealing with unspoken workplace norms.

Cultural Adaptation: Working in Canada

Are you new to the Canadian workplace? This workshop will help you understand the culture shock associated with starting a new job in Canada and the ways in which the Canadian work culture is similar to and different from other countries. Increase your understanding of Canadian workplace expectations and learn strategies to manage your transition from school to work.
