RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr. Hossain has over twenty years of teaching, research, and professional practice in various parts of the world including Bangladesh, UK, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea and North America. He researched extensively in the combined area of structures and materials and instigated original research projects those involved - comprehensive experimentation; application of engineering theories, extensive numerical/finite element/ analytical/design oriented analyses, neural network, non-destructive testing (NDT), life cycle analysis of materials/structures; development of computer aided intelligent system.

Dr. Hossain�s research is supplemented by his collaboration with industries, government and private organizations. He has involved as consultant in various interesting and challenging projects internationally that include: development of blended cement and concrete for cement and concrete industries with volcanic materials, volcanic area restoration projects, design/quality control of road pavements for highway projects; feasibility study of road project, low cost housing using stabilized soil blocks, bridge replacement and upgrading project, feasibility study and design of highway bridges and design of bridges/multistoried buildings.

Dr. Hossain research interests include: sustainable construction, short and long term properties of blended cement and concrete; high performance/self-consolidating concrete, development of construction materials with volcanic materials/industrial wastes for structural applications, computer aided design and development of expert system, reinforced concrete structures, thin walled structures, strengthening and retrofitting of structures, composite construction in steel, timber and concrete; bond in composite construction; finite element analysis of concrete and steel-concrete composite structures; high rise structures.

Development and performance evaluation of innovative structural elements/systems: beam-column frame and shear wall system for tall buildings; profiled double skin steel-concrete composite elements as walls, shear walls, slabs and beams; steel-concrete composite filled columns and beams; steel plated structures, thin walled elements � buckling/stability characteristics; shear bond/interface characteristics in composite construction; beam-column joints in composite construction; Coupled shear wall systems and shear wall-slab interaction in RC high rise structures, Shear resistance of RC beams with both normal weight and lightweight concrete including self-consolidating concrete.
Development of blended cement, concrete and other construction materials for sustainable infrastructures: high performance/ self-consolidating concrete, lightweight concrete, controlled low strength materials with innovative materials ranging from natural and industrial wastes such as: cement kiln dust, fly ash, slag, viscosity modifying agent, natural lime as well as volcanic materials (ash, pumice and scoria). Study includes: fresh and hardened properties, rheology, bond characteristics, durability (porosity, diffusivity, drying shrinkage, water/chloride permeability), marine performance (chloride and sulfate environments), pozzolanic and alkali-silica reaction, thermal conductivity, fire resistance, macro and micro-structural properties (MIP, DSC etc.), and their use in the development of structural elements. Masonry blocks and pavement materials using under-used materials such as stabilised soil, rice husk ash, volcanic ash, pumice and natural lime are also investigated.
Effect of sea spray on environment and infrastructure deterioration � includes the use of wet-candle method for determining air-borne aerosol as well as actual deposition of sea salts on infrastructure/test specimens.
Rehabilitation of structures: plate bonding; bridge deck rehabilitation with overlays
Development of computer aided expert systems and neural network models: for structural design, bridge management, foundation liquefaction, material properties and vehicular emission.

PUBLICATIONS AND WORKING PAPERS

Dr. Hossain has authored and co-authored more than 200 publications, including over 75 refereed journal articles in his areas of research interests. His research works received international recognition and obtained 1998 Ken-Francis and 1999 RMCAS concrete awards. During his academic tenure at various universities, Dr. Hossain has supervised over 50 undergraduate students and supervised/co-supervised about 20 graduate students.
