Construction and repair materials; evaluation of deteriorated structures; alkali-aggregate reaction; sulphate attack; concrete at extreme environment; development of test methods; volume change of concrete; supplementary cementing materials; alternative supplementary cementing materials; use of reclaimed concrete aggregate in concrete and other construction materials; pervious concrete; pavement analysis and design; stabilization and enhancement of highway materials; performance and testing of asphalt concrete

RESEARCH PROJECTS

Alkali-aggregate reaction: mechanisms, effects, preventive measures and development of accelerated test methods
Use of sulphide-bearing aggregates in concrete: Testing, effects on concrete and role of mix design.
Sulphate attack in concrete: mechanisms of different forms of sulphate attack, testing and preventive measures
Durability of concrete: mass transport, shrinkage, and resistance to freezing and thawing and salt scaling
Use of supplementary cementing materials in concrete
Development of sustainable unshrinkable fill using construction by-products and aggregates of different qualities
Reactivity of recycled concrete aggregate: testing and preventive measures
Recycling of demolished concrete as aggregate in new structures and municipal works
Calibration of Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (M-E PDG) Distress Models
Pervious concrete: optimization of properties and long-term performance
Simple performance testing of asphalt concrete.

TEACHING AWARDS

In his first year of employment with Ryerson, Dr. Shehata received the Teaching Excellence Award of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science for the academic year 2002/2003. In the second year, 2003/2004, Dr. Shehata received Ryerson's GREET Teaching Excellence Award from the Group to Renew and Enhance Effective Teaching (GREET), Ryerson University.
