Centre for Learning Technologies
Current Projects
We research, create and evaluate inclusive media
SIGNLINK STUDIO:
Signlanguage goes online
The Canadian Hearing Society, the Adaptive Technology Centre and the Centre for Learning Technologies have created SignLink Studio, an authoring tool that creates webpages by marking up sign language video files with sign language based hyperlinks called "signlinks". The software is free and can be downloaded at www.signlinkstudio.ca. SignLink Studio is a Java-based application that we have shown through academic studies is easy to use.
The ASID PROJECT:
Alternative Sensory Information Display
Through the ASID project, we are creating and evaluating cross-modal displays to represent sound stimuli that are unavailable to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Experimenting with unique means to translate sound stimuli into alternative forms, we hope to create an entertainment experience more indicative of the content creator's intended effect.
The CLIME Project:
Creating Liberal & Integrated Media Experiences
Through the CLIME Project, we seek to advance the media industry in Canada and abroad by making media technologies that better accommodate the needs of specific populations. Using the process that we have developed through our work with two production studios, we want to educate media and live event producers and creators as to how they can make their programming universally acceptable, marginalizing no one while empowering all.
LIVE DESCRIBE:
A Tool for Live Audio Description
LiveDescribe is a computerized system that gives users the ability to create their own video description for any digital video with a PC. Once descriptions are created, users can upload them to a central repository where blind or low vision users can download and enjoy them. Both the LiveDescribe Authoring Tool and LiveDescribe Player are available as free dowloads at the link below.
