Co-operative Education
The BSc in Biology shares a common first year with the BSc programs in Chemistry, Contemporary Science, Mathematics and its Applications, and Medical Physics. The program emphasizes environmental biology, microbial ecology and molecular biology with applications to biotechnology and environmental science. Students can also minor in Chemistry or Psychology and choose specializations in Biophysics or Computational Biology.
Biology includes the following areas of study:
applied microbiology and environmental biology
applied ecology and ecotoxicology
cell and molecular biology
genomics and proteomics, and immunology and pharmacology
applications of biotechnology
First & second year courses include:

The co-op experience includes five, four-month work terms in organizations in Ontario, Canada, and potentially abroad. To get the co-op designation students must successfully complete four of the five work terms. The first work term begins in the summer following 2nd year studies.
Biology students are encouraged to include Chemistry courses in their curriculum to increase their employment opportunities.
Biology co-op students find work in a variety of roles & settings in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, research laboratories, and in the food and cosmetics industries.
Co-op students should be open to relocating to improve their chances of finding work, as good job opportunities are often available in cities outside the greater Toronto area.

After the successful completion of first year of the Science program, students with a minimum grade point average (GPA) OF 2.50 and no failed courses are welcome to apply for the Co-op option. Subject to competition students may be required to have a GPA above 2.50 to be selected.
How to Apply for Co-op
In the fall term, 2nd year (3rd semester) students will be advised via e-mail , Blackboard, and notice on the Science web site of Co-op Information Sessions where they can meet Co-op staff, current students, and the Co-op Faculty Advisor to learn more about the program and application procedures.
The application period for Co-op is now closed.
For more information on application & admission procedures contact the Co-op Faculty Advisor.
