Co-operative Education
The BSc in Chemistry shares a common first year with the BSc programs in Biology, Contemporary Science, Mathematics and its Applications, and Medical Physics. Ryerson's Chemistry program offers a flexible curriculum that enables students to chart their own academic paths. Students can customize their degrees further with a minor in Biology, or a specialization in Applied Physics or Management Science.
The program is strongly applications-oriented. Lab hours account for a significant amount of learning time in every semester, supported by a solid grounding in the theory and principles of chemical science.
Chemistry includes some of the following areas of study:
Organic & Inorganic Chemistry, Physical & Analytical Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics
Spectroscopy & chromatography, Materials, Instrumentation,
Ecotoxicology, environmental science
Genetics, immunology, medical diagnostics techniques
Management science & operations research
First & second year courses include:

The co-op experience includes five, four-month work terms in organizations in Ontario, Canada, and potentially abroad. To get the co-op designation students must successfully complete four of the five work terms. The first work term begins in the summer following 2nd year studies.
Chemistry co-op students find work in a variety of roles such as product development, quality control, and laboratory analytical services, in settings such as pharmaceutical companies, research laboratories, and the food and cosmetics industries.
Co-op students should be open to relocating to improve their chances of finding work, as good job opportunities are often available in cities outside the greater Toronto area.

Organic Department Co-op Student
Working in a full service environmental testing lab, this position is an opportunity for someone interested in a career in analytical chemistry, site remediation or environmental protection.
The co-op student will work in the organic lab doing sample preparation for various trace organic tests such as PCBs, pesticides, PAHs and TEHs
Chemistry Co-op Student
The student will complete hands-on work at bench scale on synthesis and processing of polymers and composites used in imaging technologies.
Work will include actual polymer related experiments at bench scale, experimental design, analytical and characterization techniques, as well as process design for scale-up
Chemical Analysis Technologist
Analyze environmental samples including:
Determination of basic water quality parameters such as: metals, nutrients, BOD, COD, turbidity
Organic and inorganic sample extractions, sample cleanup and preparation for instrumental analysis, PCB analysis, pesticides analysis
Determination of microbiological parameters, including knowledge of molecular biology approaches (aseptic procedures)
After the successful completion of first year of the Science program, students with a minimum grade point average (GPA) OF 2.50 and no failed courses are welcome to apply for the Co-op option. Subject to competition students may be required to have a GPA above 2.50 to be selected.
How to Apply for Co-op
In the fall term, 2nd year (3rd semester) students will be advised via e-mail , Blackboard, and notice on the Science web site of Co-op Information Sessions where they can meet Co-op staff, current students, and the Co-op Faculty Advisor to learn more about the program and application procedures.
The application period for Co-op is now closed.
For more information on application & admission procedures contact the Co-op Faculty Advisor.
