Co-operative Education

The BSc in Contemporary Science shares a common first year with the BSc programs in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics & Its Applications, and Medical Physics. The Contemporary Science program studies the relationships among scientific fields and how these links can be used to address contemporary issues. The program offers a broadly based curriculum. Starting in second year, students select three areas of science that best match their goals and interests from the seven following streams: Biology, Chemistry, Computational Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Informatics, Physics or Psychology. Students can also pursue an option in Management Science.
Contemporary Science includes the following areas of study:
Biology; general chemistry; and science
Communication and society
History of Science; Technology and the contemporary environment; Philosophy
Environmental science, scientific technology and society in the 20th century
First & second year courses include:

The co-op experience includes five, four-month work terms in organizations in Ontario, Canada, and potentially abroad. To get the co-op designation students must successfully complete four of the five work terms. The first work term begins in the summer following 2nd year studies.
Contemporary Science co-op students are expected to work in areas such as government-policy development, business development, management, marketing and sales, teaching, communications (media), law, and health.
Co-op students should be open to relocating to improve their chances of finding work, as good job opportunities are often available in cities outside the greater Toronto area.

Students in contemporary science will find similar co-op opportunities to those students in chemistry and biology owing to commonality in the first and part of the second year of the programs. Depending on the streams selected students may seek positions with an orientation to computing, environment, physics or psychology. Students may find themselves in work terms with legal firms, businesses, or in media where their scientific knowledge and willingness to apply this knowledge to contemporary issues is becoming important.
After the successful completion of first year of the Science program, students with a minimum grade point average (GPA) OF 2.50 and no failed courses are welcome to apply for the Co-op option. Subject to competition students may be required to have a GPA above 2.50 to be selected.
How to Apply for Co-op
In the fall term, 2nd year (3rd semester) students will be advised via e-mail , Blackboard, and notice on the Science web site of Co-op Information Sessions where they can meet Co-op staff, current students, and the Co-op Faculty Advisor to learn more about the program and application procedures.
The application period for Co-op is now closed.
For more information on application & admission procedures contact the Co-op Faculty Advisor.
If you have questions about academic matters such as: co-op admission requirements, requests for alternate work and academic term sequences, when to apply to get into co-op, grades for co-op work terms, work term reports etc. please contact the Faculty Advisor. | For questions about the job application process, co-op fees, potential employers, typical co-op employment rates etc. contact the Co-op Co-ordinator. | ||||||||||||||||||
