Phenomenology, landscape, urban design and the constructed environment
Blackfriar’s Bridge, London, Steven Evans Photographer
In his investigations of landscape history, human occupation of urban neighbourhoods, and interpretations of the constructed environment George Thomas Kapelos has focused on phenomenological readings of the environment. The exhibition and catalogue “Tracking Ontario’s Thames” curated by George Thomas Kapelos, with photographs by Steven Evans (Museum London, 2002), presented an investigation of the river landscape in southwestern Ontario from the perspective of the lived experience of inhabitants of the watershed. In 2006 research funded through Ryerson University explored the success of Toronto’s ‘Clean and Beautiful City’ initiative. “Finding Beauty” (ISOCARP Review 3: 2007 124 – 145) provided insights into the success of the City of Toronto’s beautification, finding that small-scale and localized interventions contributed significantly to human well-being and environmental awareness and appreciation.
