Ryerson University wants the input of students, faculty and staff on the future of food at Ryerson.

The university has launched a survey of the campus community for the development of its first Food Services Master Plan. The 10-year plan will provide recommendations for retail food services, the residence meal plan program and catering services, and will apply to the university’s main campus buildings, including the Mattamy Athletic Centre and the Ted Rogers School of Management. The survey (opens in new window)  runs online from January 17 to February 3, and nine focus groups are planned for January 24, 25 and 26.

“We’re reviewing everything we do,” said Voula Cocolakis, executive director, University Business Services. “This includes resident meal plans, retail operations and catering services.

“The Master Plan process will make recommendations for what type of retail we should have on campus; what buildings they should be in; whether we should consider different residence meal plans for different populations; and much more, all based on the results of the campus-wide survey and focus groups,” said Cocolakis.

The Master Plan continues a period of great evolution for food on the Ryerson campus. Since 2013, Ryerson has committed to using 25 per cent of food sourced from local, sustainable providers for campus meals; increased choices for community members with allergies and dietary restrictions; returned to scratch-made cooking; and significantly decreased the use of frozen, pre-packed meals. The university also branded Ryerson Food Services as “Ryerson Eats” and refurbished the Hub Café in Jorgenson Hall.

For Cocolakis, the Food Services Master Plan is about continuing the good work and adapting to changes. “We want Ryerson Eats to be a vibrant, sustainable, and responsive food operation. Our vision is for it to meet the constantly evolving, demanding, and diverse tastes and needs of our community.

“Our goal is to provide a positive dining experience, focused on local, sustainable food sources - healthy choices at reasonable prices, supported by informed and engaging customer service.”
