Giving is at the heart of TMU and our long-standing relationship with United Way is a testament to that. Join us as we unite against poverty and build a better, stronger GTA for everyone who lives here.
Poverty is everyone’s problem
A community is only as strong as the sum of its parts. Too many people in the Peel, Toronto and York regions are battling poverty, and finding it difficult to access the essential services and supports they need to succeed. The challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as economic instability, has put our most vulnerable community members at even more risk.
While some of us may feel removed from the struggles of living below the poverty line, it’s a social and economic issue that affects everyone in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA): when people can’t access basic resources to help them live healthy lives, we all fall behind.
Fortunately, we are in a position to empower those who need our assistance. By supporting the United Way, you can help ensure no one falls through the cracks.
United Way is meeting our community’s most urgent needs by directing funds to the agencies and services that support neighbourhoods where poverty is concentrated and where COVID-19 has hit the hardest. But they can’t continue to do it without you.
When you make a donation to TMU’s 2023 United Way Campaign you’ll be an important part of helping our community rebuild and tackle poverty across the GTA.
A donation of any amount can make a difference:
- $100 can provide an unemployed youth with transit funds to get them to a job interview and to work, up until their first paycheque.
- $200 can provide food boxes to feed 12 families, providing them with affordable, culturally appropriate groceries.
- $1,200 (that’s $100 a month) can provide warm clothing to 10 children for the winter months.
There are many wonderful organizations in the GTA that are committed to tackling critical social and economic challenges, but the United Way is Toronto Metropolitan University's longtime charity of choice. Like them, we believe that everyone deserves a fair chance at a good life – their support systems fight poverty in all its forms, and create opportunities for people from all walks of life.
The United Way network also has the size and scope to connect a range of partnerships to build stronger solutions. Just as we work to give every member of the TMU community the chance to thrive, we want to ensure that the people around us can build bright futures too. If we each do our part, everyone reaps the benefits of a healthy, resilient and prosperous society.
