Centre for Student Development and Counselling
Group Counselling
The Centre offers a number of group programs that are free to students. Topics range from educational and career related matters to life skills and personal issues. All groups are led by trained counsellors, last for one to two hours, and take place in a comfortable, safe and confidential environment.
What are Group Programs?
Groups provide an opportunity for students to meet with a counsellor in relation to a particular issue they have in common. Groups can be:
1) a single session focusing on a specific topic,
2) comprised of a limited number of sessions in order to address an issue in a structured way, or
3) an extended group counselling experience
Why Choose Group Over Individual Counselling?
Group counselling can offer you a variety of perspectives and insights that come, not only from the facilitator/s, but also from other members. You can also benefit from observing and learning how others solve their problems. As well, groups provide a context in which to enlist mutual support and receive feedback, both of which can be valuable in fostering personal change.
How Do I Join?
Some groups require that you arrange to meet with the facilitator prior to joining in order to discuss your goals and determine whether what is being offered will be compatible with your needs; for other groups, you just show up or simply register at the Centre, room JOR 07C, or call 416-979-5195.
Detailed descriptions of our current group offerings follow.
