Submit an Online Assignment

Introduction

The Blackboard assignment tool allows your instructor to provide the details of an assignment and have students submit their completed assignments online.

You will have access to your assignment for a limited time, as specified by the instructor. During this time, you may work on your assignment, upload files to it and save it. If the alotted time has passed, or if you click 'Submit', you will no longer be able to work on it.

If your instructor has set up Group Assignments, only one group member will need to submit.

Steps to submitting an online assignment:

  • Click on the appropriate category in the Course Menu (the navigation bar on the left-hand side of your course). It may be in a section called 'Assignments', or it may be in with your course notes - your instructor will let you know.

  • The assignment will look something like the image above, with an assignment-specific icon to the left of the description.. Click on the assignment title to view the assignment information and/or to submit your completed assignment files to Blackboard.

*Note: This link may appear for a limited time, at your instructor's discretion. Please keep the due date and time in mind when completing your assignment.

The Assignment will look something like the image above, outlining the instructions for the assignment, giving links to any necessary files, etc. This is also where you will come to submit your assignment file(s).

Read instructions and download any attached assignment files:

Your instructor may have attached some files for you to download. Click on the link to the file and choose to save the file to your computer. Make sure to keep track of where it is being saved on your hard drive, so you can find it later!

Upload Assignment File

Submit your assignment file(s):

  1. Submission - this box can be used to paste your assignment, if that is what your instructor has asked you to do. Please note that you should not copy straight from Microsoft Word into a textbox like this, as Microsoft Word contains formatting codes that could cause problems in your submission.
  2. Attach File - Start by clicking Browse My Computer (if uploading from your computer) or Browse Content Collection if you have already uploaded the file to your Content Collection folder. Select the file and submit the selection. *Note: Please make sure your filename only contains letters and numbers - no spaces, dashes, or odd characters. The filename should be no longer than 10 characters.
  3. Next, the name of the file will appear in a new Selected File section. To finally attach it to your assignment, you must click Attach File. Once you have done this, the file will appear in the Attached Files section, and you know it has been properly attached. You can attach more than one file, if you need to.
  4. If you need to, you can type a message in the Comments box.
  5. Cancel, Save as Draft, or Submit -
    • Cancel will ignore any additions you have made to the assignment and will bring you to the previous screen. Be careful not to click this button if you have added any info - it will be lost!
    • Save as Draft allows you to save the changes you have made to the assignment, so that you may return to complete it later (as long as you return within the time that the assignment is available).
    • Submit will submit your assignment to your instructor. You will not be able to make any changes once this has been done.

Check Your Results

There are two places you can check for your assignment results:

  1. The Assignment link - click it, then click 'OK' - this is only an option as long as the assignment is visible.

  2. 'My Grades' tool - this is only an option if the instructor has enabled this tool for your class. If it is, it will be located in the Course Menu, and/or within the Tools section. Once in the tool , click on the grade of the assignment (underlined).
