Tips for Online Communication
Netiquette - online etiquette
The Golden Rule : "Don't Forget the Human"
If no other Netiquette 'rules' stick, remember this one. It's easy to forget that there is a person on the other side of a message... Behave as though you are talking to people face-to-face - if you wouldn't say something to their face, be sure you don't say it online.
Be aware that there are a variety of people in an online environment of varying races, religions, abilities, and orientations.
Show everyone the same respect that you expect to receive.
During Online Communication
-
Be respectful of others' postings, use the names of your classmates
-
Be polite when you post: reread your messages before posting or use the "preview" function in the Discussion area.
-
React slowly and think about your reply: don't let things escalate into ridiculous situations.
-
Do NOT use capital letters: they indicate anger and are considered very intrusive and LOUD.
-
It isn't always easy to decode the tone of a message. Try to indicate the tone using descriptive words, or even common internet lingo. For example: use the word <grin> or <joke> or even a "smiley" like this ;-D to indicate that you are joking.
-
Always sign your name on a message - people can't always figure out who you are by your email address or screen name!
-
Try to speak in full sentences when composing an email. Don't make other people decode your message!
*Remember: You are using a University system, therefore your conduct online must follow Ryerson standards. Action may be taken if there is misconduct in an online course. Please see your instructor or department for details.
