Groups

Instructors can use Groups in their course to:

  • Create study groups or project groups.
  • Give select members of the course access to unique areas to the course.
  • Create a sign-up so that students can add themselves to presentation groups or topic groups.

Groups can be given a selection of private tools, including File Exchange, Discussion Board, Collaboration (Chat), etc.

This tool can be found in: Course Control Panel > Users and Groups > Groups

Make sure the tool is available to students in your course!

IMPORTANT: "Not Implemented" Error and Group Membership

Do you get a popup error message "Not Implemented" when accessing your Blackboard course or organization? This is due to a bug in Blackboard that causes problems when a user has been added to more than 10 groups in the groups tool in their Blackboard course or organization.

As there is currently no fix for our version of Blackboard, the best way to prevent or resolve this problem is to ensure that no user is added to any more than 10 groups.

Single Group vs Group Sets...

Groups can be created individually, or in sets. Groups can have the enrollment determined by the instructor, selected randomly by the Groups tool, or have the students self-enroll. Sets are managed differently from individual groups, so please be sure to read the documentation before attempting to make any changes to a group set (or a group that is a part of a set).

Group Settings

The group settings currently only encompasses one specific area - the option to have students create and edit their own self-enrolled groups.

By default, students are able to create their own self-enrolled groups. You will have to disable this option manually, if you do not wish to have students creating groups. That said, you always have the ability to edit or even remove any groups that students have created.

Group Assignments

Instructors have the ability to deliver and grade assignments based on group membership. This topic is covered in more detail in the Assignments section of this website.
