Create random section for quiz

Why randomize questions?

Unfortunately, some students will try to cheat on a quiz or exam. One way to combat this is to randomize questions so that students will not see questions in the same order, and it is not as easy for them to share answers.

You may also find it useful to randomize questions if you wish to recycle questions previously used in a pre-test, so that students do not see the exact same selection of questions or in the same question order.

D2L Brightspace offers a few ways for you to organize and randomize questions, to suit the way you would like to present a quiz.

Randomizing options

Instructor creates all questions to be randomized in the main level of the course. Any sections will be randomly displayed throughout the quiz but questions within a section will be displayed as per the section settings.

Students see all quiz questions from the quiz, but each student sees the questions in a different order.

To learn how to randomize all questions at the quiz level, see Create a quiz.

What is a section?
A section allows you to divide your questions into separate "folders". A random section is a special type of "folder" that allows you to randomly display all (or a subset) of questions to each student.

Learn how to randomly display all questions in a random section in the Randomize all questions within a section tab on this page.

Within a random section, you can choose to randomly display a particular number of questions from the larger pool of questions in that section. For example, display any 4 out of 7 available questions.

Each student would see a different selection of questions from the same pool of questions, and in a different order than others taking the quiz.

Randomize all questions within a section

add questions to library

Follow these steps to create a random section in your quiz. A random section displays questions in random order from a question pool. You can create a non-random section by following these steps, as well; just remember to select "Section" (as opposed to "Random Section") in step 2.

  1. From the Quizzes page, click to create a new quiz or edit an existing quiz. Click Add/Edit Questions
add questions to library
  1. Click New > Random Section
add questions to library
  1. Give the Section a name. You can add an (optional) description for the section as well. Students do not have to see the section name - there are display settings at the bottom of this page that customize what students see.
  2. Click Save to create the random section itself.
choose random section to edit

You will now return to the quiz edit page. To add questions to the random section you just created, click on the name of the new random section.

  1. Now you must select the pool of questions to pull from. You can only import questions already created in the question library. Here are instructions on adding questions to the question library.

Click Import when you're ready to import the questions.

  1. Select the Source Selection for the questions. This is the section folder of questions from the Question Library.
  2. Select the questions from the Question Library folder that you want included in the randomization. We recommend not using the container's heading. (In the image, you'll notice the folder is not checked off - only the specific questions.) This is because the container's heading may appear for students in an unpredictable way.
  3. Click Save when complete.

  1. You can assign how many points each question will be worth by typing a value into the Points each field.
  2. When complete, click Done Editing Questions. Repeat these steps for any other random sections in your quiz.
