User Management
Add/Remove Users
These instructions are only to be used when adding course guests or organization participants. If you manually add students that are registered in your course, there may be problems in your course that we will not be able to fix and you will be stuck with them for the remainder of the semester. Please see this page for information on how registered students get access to your course shell.
Use this method to add:
- Students who are auditing your course, but are not officially registered
- Guests
- Organization Participants
At this time, we ask that you have us add others requiring Instructor, TA. Builder or Grader access to a course shell. (For Organization shells, the Leader is responsible for adding other users. Please contact us if the primary contact needs to change.)
- Make sure the User has an Account
- Enroll the User in your Course
- Change the User's Role, if Necessary
- Guest Access
Make sure the User has an Account
If the person you wish to add is Ryerson staff, student or faculty, they need to have a my.ryerson account in order to access Blackboard. This includes TAs, as they are employed by Ryerson. Please see this page for information on activating your my.ryerson account.
Find out the exact user ID of the people you wish to add to your course. There are cases where a person will have more than one account, or where there are multiple people with the same name with Blackboard accounts. Knowing the exact usernames will make your job much easier.
If the user is not from Ryerson, please contact the CCS Help Desk (see contact number above) in order to get a guest account setup for them.
Enroll the User in Your Course
This is how users can be added to the course. Please keep in mind that the person must have a my.ryerson account in order to be added to your course. It is best that you get their username from them before attempting to add them, as there are many users with the same name at Ryerson, and some users even have multiple accounts. Adding them by using their specific username ensures you are adding the correct user, and the correct account.

Find Users To Enroll Button

Enroll Users by Username
- Go to Control Panel > Users and Groups > Users
- Click the Find Users To Enroll button.
- If you know the username of the person you would like to add, you can enter it into the Username field. If you don't know their username, click the Browse button to access the user search feature. In the search results, check the checkbox for the user that you want to add and click Submit.
- Role - here, you can indicate what role the user should have.
- Enrollment Availability - By default, this should be set to Yes. If you set it to No, the user will be added to your course, but will not have access to it.
- Click Submit.
If you are unable to locate the user you wish to add:
- Check to be sure you are spelling the name correctly.
- Look at the Users list in your course to check that the user isn't already added to your course.
- The user may not have a my.ryerson account yet. You can contact us to look them up.
Change the User's Role and Availability, if Necessary
Here is where you can change a user's role, as well as their access to the class in general, if necessary. You may wish to refer to the various roles and what access each role has.
- Go to Control Panel > Users and Groups > Users
- Search for a particular user in the course, or list all of the users in the course.
- Once you find the user to modify, you can change the properties of the user. Click the arrow icon to the right of the username, and click Change User's Role in Course.
- Roles: You can change the user role in the course by selecting the radio button (the circle) tp the left of either Student, Instructor, Teaching Assistant, Course Builder, Grader or Guest.
- Available: You can choose to make a user "unavailable" in your course without deleting them entirely. Select No from this dropdown menu.
- Click Submit to complete the process.
Guest Access
Unfortunately, we have had to turn off guest access across the entire site, for the time being. During this time, we suggest that you add your guests with a 'student' role.
Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
