Undergraduate Liberal Studies Guide

The required number of Lower Level (Table A) and Upper Level (Table B) Liberal Studies courses varies by undergraduate program, and is specified in the program description provided in the Ryerson Calendar. Students are responsible for making appropriate course selections and should consult the descriptions of their programs published in the calendar.

Important Note: Certain courses listed in Table A and Table B, due to their close relation to the professional fields, cannot be taken for Liberal Studies credit in some programs. Please see Table A and Table B Restrictions for more information.

More information on Liberal Studies can be found at the Faculty of Arts along with the Liberal Studies Course Offerings.

Consultation with the Liberal Studies academic advisors listed below is recommended if students have any uncertainty about the appropriateness of their course selection(s).

For general information on Liberal Studies, contact Chris De Barros 416-979-5190, JOR119.

French and Spanish Courses
Introductory French and Spanish courses (101/201) can only be used as lower level liberal studies credits. All other French and Spanish courses, except for those specifically designated as professionally-related courses, can be used as either lower or upper level liberal studies credits.

  1. Students who are taking a French or Spanish course at Ryerson University for the first time are required to take the placement test available on the Department of French and Spanish website and register in the appropriate class based on the results. Students are also required to bring a copy of their results to their first class. This is particularly important for students who have taken Gr. 12 or OAC French/Spanish or immersion courses, or who have benefited from exposure to a French or Spanish-speaking environment.
  2. Students who have little or no knowledge of French or Spanish as well as those who have taken only Grade 9 Core French or Spanish may select FRE/SPN 101 on RAMSS. Please note that students who have taken Gr. 12 or OAC French or Spanish will not be permitted to enroll in FRE/SPN 101.
  3. Students who have previously studied French or Spanish courses at Ryerson may select the next level of French or Spanish on RAMSS.
  4. Please note that FRE/SPN 101, 201, 301, 401, 501, and 601 must be taken in consecutive order. Students who require additional information about the courses, particularly those proceeding beyond FRE/SPN 601, should consult the Department of French and Spanish website.

Please note that students who willfully or inadvertently register in the wrong course may be forced, at the instructor's discretion, to drop the course or to reregister in the appropriate course.

Please note that courses labelled FRS and SPS are offered by the Department of French and Spanish but are in fact taught in English.

Language Courses

LNG 100, 200 and 300 (for students whose first language is not English)
Students for whom English is a second or additional language and who are registered in programs that accept LNG 100, 200 and 300 courses for credit may take all three LNG courses, LNG 100, LNG 200 and LNG 300, as lower level liberal studies courses. However, a maximum of two credits only may be achieved for these courses. During the Course Selection period, interested students must take the Online ESL Placement Test.  They will receive an email which indicates which course has been assigned.  They must present this email to the instructor in the first class.  For additional information, please contact Marju Toomsalu.
